We made an appointment (yes it was weeks out but no place had enough help). We were seen close to our appt time. The DMV officer was incredibly kind and patient with my special needs sister so she could get the Real ID.

I took my brother to renew his NC ID on June 30 about 2:30pm. The DMV rep told us he just stopped accepting walkins 15 min ago and my brother could make an appt. The next appt was Aug and his ID would be expired. We were told if my brother comes in the morning when they opened he may get his ID as a walk in. We came Tue July 5. Arrived at 7:35am before opening along with 2 ladies who did not have an appt. When the DMV opened at 8am the rep said he was taking appts only. So we came twice in one weeks time and were turned away. We don't have a computer. The DMV is supposed to take some walkins. I moved from FL. We never had a horrible experience with the DMV in FL. The Newton DMV is anti customer service. The DMV rep said we could drive to Hickory or Morganton. Why would I want to waste gas when we live near the Newton DMV. Horrible experience. What's going on at the Newton DMV?

Each time I have went, they seemed to be very busy. With only 3 - 4 on staff.

Yes you can walk up. BUT those who have an appointment will get to go before you and then they go to those who walked up. I would recommend making an appointment. I saw about 10 people wait hours and still was there waiting when I left. Hope this helps.

It's open but I would suggest scheduling an appointment although they did see walk in arrivals while I was there. Be sure to have all documentation needed because they ask for everything before entry.

Yes, technically you can. But they will only work you in around scheduled appointments. I showed up right at 8am. There were only 2 appointments that showed up and we ended up being the 6th person in line. We were done in about 30 minutes. This was at the license office in Newton.

Just go in there with all your information and hard copy proof of insurance. They're not doing road tests they're just giving the license out. They will make them take the sign test over again though.
I wouldn't advise never no when your going to run up on a license check then you would end up in court just to show your new ones
We visited there after making an appointment online. They were short staffed. I would Call the main Raleigh office instead. Good luck

book appointment online first. they strictly keep very limited amount of people inside. wear a mask. they take your temp. they ask pertinent covid questions. they space out the waiting area. even if you arrive ahead of time, you will still wait outside.

In addition to Elias's comment if you want to save 5 dollars have something that came in the mail with your (the person that is getting the license) name and address on it , I used my son's SS card that came in the mail just brought the whole thing in cause he needed SS card anyway and it came in his name so two in one .
If your license hasn't been expired for longer than 2 years you may go to the office with your expired license. If you are trying to get Real ID then you will need Birth Cert, Social S. Card and 2 proof of address

The office is closed today. Sorry for the inconvenience but for the safety of our employees it was best. Yes you will take a new photo, we also renew license and we have RID as long as you have the correct documents.
