Because of covid the visitor’s center was closed. But the walk was great as we stretched our legs walking some interesting trails!

The dam and creek below the parking lot at the Visitor Center is a double cool place to meander. First, it’s mostly shady. Second, it was the the coolest place for two kids to “accidentally” slip into the water on a hot April day. Hikers and kids cross the trail on large stepping stones. The water is about chest high at its deepest to 6 and 10 year olds.

The visitor center itself was closed when I got there on my way traveling Blue Ridge Parkway. The bathrooms were however open. The area is very beautiful overlooking James River with picnic areas with benches and table. The Visitor Center is very close to a bridge for cars over the river but there is also pedestrian bridge beneath it. From the same area you can take walking trails. In addition, there are overlooks with magnificent views. Do not miss stopping if driving by. You would not regret it.

This was a good little leg stretcher. There were porta-potties and picnic tables available. Pretty neat to walk on the bridge. The trail of trees wasn't that impressive to my group of teens but they were getting tired and hungry at this part of our trip.

On a leash. Its a national park and is full of wildlife.

Is there a place to put a canoe in the water?

Sadly, I would have to say no, based on my last visit. The area immediately around the visitor center doesn't have any gentle slopes more cliff-like. There was also a lot of undergrowth brush near the riverbank. You could technically hike the canoe to the other side of the river. But that will require about a half mile hike. And then you would have to hike down two flights of steps. You should call the park service to make sure you're even legally allowed to launch in the area.
