We happened to run into this place on our way to a river tubing trip and it was the best surprise stop we could have made! The pies are AMAZING - fresh, still warm, not too sweet and the crust is to die for. We also picked up lunch sandwiches and they did not disappoint - especially the super tender ciabatta bread used for each. To top it all off - service was incredibly friendly and kind. Try the cherry pie, apple pie and pimento cheese sandwich

There are no words to describe what a special destination this little cafe and pie shoppe is!! It’s off the beaten path and yet worth many hours drive for the taste of pie that brings back in a moment your Grammy’s kitchen! It is so so good! I’m really not a big pie fan or huge sweet eater, yet when I close my eyes and bite into triple berry crumb pie it’s like eating from my grandparents’ garden raspberry bushes as a child all over again. The line will at times be a little long but you’ll spend that time attempting to impossibly choose just which flavor of pie to select from the tantalizing glass case full of mouth watering options or looking at the memorabilia and photos that line the walls honoring mama Woodruff’s legacy. You can’t help but feel her presence at the empty bench where she sat at a century of age singing sweet hymns with a beaming smile. You might end up outside at a picnic bench in the yard on a pretty day because the cafe tables are full, but digging into a fresh peach or strawberry farm fresh milkshake will leave you forgetting everything else. The lunch menu is small by intention— every bite is perfection. Don’t miss the winter seasonal comfort food of pinto beans because no one does them better than they do with a fresh slice of cornbread. Yum! The sweet tea is heavenly good and served with fresh lemon wedges. The dearest sister owners and staff field countless phone calls for orders between baking and serving you. It’s like being cared for and loved through each delicious morsel. You won’t soon forget your visit and you’ll be just waiting for a chance to come again soon to bring another friend who has somehow never tried Woodruff’s pie yet. Make the trip from anywhere as it’s always always worth it. You might just take home a stack of boxes of pies like everyone else for your family or next church gathering. And just as likely you’ll be gleefully nibbling away at a slice of pie you couldn’t resist bringing home instead of breakfast the next morning! The world needs what you can find out in the country at a little historic former gas station in Elon, Virginia. On the way home, stop by Morris Orchards around the corner like we do to pick some berries, apples or peaches and take in the best mountain pastoral views to make a photo memory of your day.

After hearing about this black-owned pie shop in a Washington Post article, I had to make a trip. If you live in NC, this is the perfect day trip. My mother and I drove from Durham, NC to Monroe, VA (outside of Lynchburg). We placed an order for two whole pies in advance. We also ordered slices of pie to go. We tried pecan, coconut chess, buttermilk and sweet potato. They were all so good. You can really taste the love. The sisters were so nice and welcoming to us. They shared some of their family histories with us. We will definitely come back!

Stopped by because the sign said they had pies, ended up ordering the daily lunch special of a half of a chicken salad on ciabatta with lettuce and tomato, a cup of vegetable soup, bag of chips & a pickle spear. It was delicious and the …
