Federal courts have deemed public libraries to be a "limited public forum," which means public libraries have some discretion to reasonably restrict the exercise of free speech rights in their buildings - especially to the extent that the conduct in question would be disruptive to the other patrons or inconsistent with the library's fundamental mission. In most cases, taking photographs and/or recording videos of library staff or patrons without their permission can be prohibited as a matter of library policy

Questions & Answers

Are we allowed to excerise our civil rights to record in public or nah? I like to record inside as I have extreme ADHD and I forgot everything I do like a gold fish, so recording helps me remember things reasonably.

That would be a resounding no. All civil rights are null and void at the door. You are subject to search and seizure and arrest when entering here

Are masks required in the library?

Janice Davis | Sep 26, 2021
Br Sc | May 29, 2022

No. It is a public building and discriminating against people for what they wear would open them to a civil rights violation lawsuit

Yes you can! We'll send them back for you. Just be advised that it takes a little while for your books to get back where they came from.

I live in Seattle, WA and am researching the family of Morgan and Mary Green Greene of Danbury. I cannot find archives of Danbury on the internet or through my library. Could you help?

Rachel Knapik | Feb 28, 2022
Brian Losee | Feb 28, 2022

I guess. The Danbury News times archives would be best for birth or obits and the Danbury Historical society at 51 or 53 Main Street could be of service for older records. You could also go to the City of Danbury land records under erected online to search any real estate transactions. Same with tax records.

Does the library take old sets of encyclopedias. I have a complete of compotns encyclopedias.

Frank Salvatore | Sep 26, 2021

No. I’m sorry. Neither the library nor the Friends accept old encyclopedias as donations.

I've had a nice just came to USA. and would like to learn English after work, from 6pm to 9pm..? would you please .... Thanks.

Danbury Public Library | Sep 27, 2019

Unfortunately, the library is only open until 7pm Monday-Thursday and until 5pm on Friday-Sunday, so that doesn't leave you a lot of time after work to come into the library. But if you get your library card, you can use the language learning app, Pronunciator, in order to learn English at home. http://learning.pronunciator.com/getstarted.php?library_id=18978519

Is it possible to find out if a book has been checked out.

Debra Guidotti | Sep 27, 2019
Danbury Public Library | Sep 27, 2019

When you look up a book in the catalog, if it has a due date listed next to it, then it is checked out. If it says "Checked In" then the book should be on the shelf and available for you to place a hold on it and/or check it out. If you look up a book and aren't sure about its status, please feel free to give us a call to ask! 203-797-4505

Hello, I have lot books for donation, can I leave any day in the library?

Helen Silva | Sep 27, 2018
Danbury Public Library | Sep 27, 2018

We recommend that you bring all donations to the Friends of the Danbury Library located at 15 Main Street. You can drop them off there any day. If you have too many books to unload yourself, their next collection event is this Saturday, May 12, 2018. They'll have volunteers on hand to help you unload your books.

Are there computers and printers. ? And how many and are they up to date and in working order

Susan Oleary | Sep 27, 2018
Scott Mason | Sep 27, 2018

Yes they have 2 computer labs. One on their main floor and another in their 2nd floor technology center. Both labs have printers and all the computers work and up to date. My guess is they're about 60 between the 2 labs.

Can I Renew my card on line

Karen Fusci | Sep 27, 2017
Danbury Public Library | Sep 27, 2018

Not at this time, no. In order to renew your card you must bring your photo ID and your library card into the library. We have had many requests to implement the ability to renew online, so we're keeping it in mind for the future.
