We paid for the first day through a friend who was there visiting other friends until noon. We arrived at noon and began to set up camp. Camp Host demanded we pay again. We asked him to explain where our receipt went that was attached to the post. He admitted to taking it. Long story short, we paid him again. Also, the fee he charged was more than usual. When I asked for a receipt for the total amount paid he refused to provide it. It appears campers are supplementing this individual's retirement income! Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.

While on a road trip from the San Francisco Bay Area to Northern Colorado in mid-August, 2021, we stayed at this campground for 2 nights and had no problem finding a flat, shaded site by one of the big Jeffery Pine trees on a hot Sunday afternoon. This campground does not take reservations. The flush toilets and potable water spigots throughout the campground make for a nice experience. At 7,500’ elevation, it was considerably cooler than the 98° in nearby Bishop at 4,150’ elevation. Our site was on the east side of the campground next to the pleasantly babbling Bishop Creek – very nice! It is only a short 10 mile drive on an excellent paved road to the Bishop Pass Trailhead, where we enjoyed a great hike up to Long Lake.

Such a nice campground with great trails and we even went off trailing to find other big trees which was really fun

Great shaded campground along Bishop Creek, lots of waterfalls and good clean arrives nearby. Pro tip, get a lunch at Cardinal Village, buy a mug, free coffee refills.

Questions & Answers

We are planning a trip in mid July. But is it first come first serve or do you need to make a reservation?

Big Trees is 100% first-come-first-serve.

We are planning a family trip us from Vegas some members in Cali. Are there problems getting camp sites? If so can you recommend a site we can reserve? We will be coming end of oct.

We normally get there Wed to avoid weekend campers and no problem getting a site then. Big Trees is one of the nicer campsites. There are many around there. Browns Town takes reservations.

Fishing? Hook ups? And is there reservations needed?

Fishing yes. Hook ups no. Reservations... nope. First come first serve.
