The Poinsett Bridge, just like the hotel and flower, are named after Joel R Poinsett. The oldest bridge is South Carolina, possibly the entire southeast, was built in 1820 on part of a trail once called Saluda Mountain Road. It was used by travelers to cross Little Gap Creek, mostly on horse and wagon, in route to and from Ashville NC. The bridge is made from various sized jagged rocks without any concrete and is presumed to be built by slaves or possibly even friendly native Americans remaining from the Catawba or Cherokee tribes. The spirits that are rumored to haunt to grounds are usually attributed to one of these groups. It's considered one of the most haunted places in South Carolina with people reporting creepy sounds and unexplained lights. I can recall ghost stories about the bridge involving lynchings, Indian burial grounds being disturbed, a hanging from it, among a few others. When I was a teen in the 80's it was a dare to walk across it after dark alone. While I'm not declaring it haunted or not, I did survive my lone attempt...although it was more of a full speed sprint back!

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Poinsett Bridge. I had read much about it over the years, but had not had the opportunity to visit until today. The bridge was much bigger than expected and the entire setting is peaceful and serene. Far exceeded my expectations.

This was by far the best bridge we’ve found in this area. The history is rich and the water was so cool to walk through.

Really neat bridge... Don't make them like this anymore. Parking is across the street. Left side of the bridge has the best views

When you get there you park across the street and walk across the road to a set of steps made of stone.... I would say these steps are just a little bit steep but not too bad the steps are very wide and also has hand rails. I am guessing here but I think there are only 5 steps down then you will be standing on top of the bridge when you get down them. The river will be under you. This is one of my most favorite places to go. I honestly do not think this is a very strenuous walk. It is not far at all from where you park to walk across the road and the steps to walk down that lead you to be on top of the bridge. I would guess about a football field between your car and standing on the bridge after you walk down the stone steps and everything. I hope this helps and I hope you and your wife get to go it is beautiful and an amazing part of our history. I love it here !
