Previous answers intrigue me. I spend most of my time in the Philippines now,where you always select your seats at time of purchase. After the movie starts of course you can just get up and move (eg one of those obnoxious texters is seated in front of you). I found that cultural norm peculiar at first but have learned to like it. Many times in Fresno I have elected NOT to go to a popular movie showing for fear of finding seats apart from my companions, or worse, in one of the front most rows.

Technically, it is against the rules. However, as along as the food is not smelly, or obviously sold there as well, ie popcorn, hotdogs, boxes of candy, staff will look the other way. I, myself have brought in tea, pieology, doghouse, 5 guys, etc. With no problems.

I once tried to call the theater and no option for a person. I was going to ask if I could just go to Star Wars without ordering online, if they have seats available. I guess the best option is to select the option for a manager and they give you the number of someone to call if it's really important. If you just want to make sure a movie isn't sold out, just order tickets from Fandango. It's worth the extra $ to make sure you can see the movie. If there are no seats available for a showing it'll not show up or say it's sold out.
