I have 10 years experience in ballet, tap, and jazz dance, but aside from a few fitness classes in college, I hadn't had any formal dance instruction in the last 15 years. I searched high and low for dance classes for adults, encountering a lot of frustration along the way. I work a standard 8-5 job, with a one-hour commute each way, so finding a class at a time I could actually attend was the primary difficulty. The second issue was a beginner class would not be a good fit, but since I hadn't danced in over a decade, an advanced class would put me in over my head. Then I stumbled upon Universal Dance Academy. The staff was very responsive and helpful. They told me they would be offering an adult tap class in the upcoming term, and contacted me with the info I needed as soon as the schedule was published. Registering for the class was simple through an online portal, which can be used to pay monthly tuition after enrollment. Before my first class, I was skeptical about the "all levels" nature of the class. I didn't really think a teacher could instruct students with a wide range of abilities all at once. Jack proved me wrong! His class really does work for all skill levels. This is far, far from an easy class. I am definitely challenged every week. Jack encourages his students to get out of their comfort zone while helping them to be attentive toward improving and maintaining their technique and basic skills. Every student receives individual attention - there is no hiding in the back of the room! I have also observed the classes that meet immediately before mine, so I know this is not a one-off, but is the standard for classes at UDA. UDA has also been great about providing dance instruction in the midst of COVID-19. They are very communicative with dancers and families and have made Zoom classes available as needed. For students coming in to the studio, temperature checks, hand sanitizer, and masking rules are all enforced. I strongly recommend UDA to anyone who is interested in studying dance, but especially adults who are looking for a great tap class. You will definitely get that here!
