They seem nice, but they made me wait 2 weeks for a meet and greet and they rejected me the day after. That's their prerogative, but meanwhile, I have not received any prenatal care because I was attempting to establish care with them (and others at the same time). Did I really need to wait 2 weeks to hear no? Then they recommended homebirth midwives, one who does not respond to email and two others who are 2+ hours away from my home. Not helpful.

I am very glad that I was able to have a healthy baby and through home birth but I would not recommend Tina unless you are absolutely specific with your expectations and are certain that she likes you because otherwise she will look for any reason to rusk you out, make snide comments, all after having been paid and you are 38 weeks. As a first time mom I pretty much went went the flow not knowing what to expect and not wanting to question a professional which was a mistake but also just not the right midwife for me. Pros: Was able to have home birth Great at finding baby's position and explaining position Fine with trying different positions and staying hydrated through labor Immediate skin to skin time Delayed cord clamping Cons: Had seven cervical checks and they weren't necessary during labor and was not understanding to the fact that just being short and annoyed with me saying relax and its obvious you've never had a baby before is unnecessary, Said my water has broken with absolute certainty but actually hadn't, Student midwife was invited to my homebirth without permission didn't even ask, but turned out she was good I was told that because when I went to the bathroom after giving birth and wanted to cover up with my robe that now wasn't the time to get high and mighty about wanting clothes when all I expected in my own home was to get some dignity back after giving birth in front of four people and now cold. At two day home visit was told that my baby stinks which was unnecessary and was only from the vernix around the neck and it wasn't even a strong smell but also didn't mention anything that would be gentle enough to use, which I was able to get it all gone day four but that really wasn't necessary. Just was not the experience I would have thought based on reviews but it was during a busy time so maybe that contributed to the afterthought care I received.

What i really liked about Sankofa: -Very personable - Listened to all my questions and provided valuable tips/tricks for first time mom to be. -Liked not being pricked and prodded throughout my pregnancy (natural approach) -During pushing they made sure to kinda coach me n helped my recognizing when to push so i didn’t tear. Things that I could have went better: - Attentiveness/prep for water birth What i mean by this is although i was pretty prepared and adapt to working through my contractions i felt as though my family members were checking more on me especially towards the end. Also my mother and husband advised the team that they thought i was nearing my time of delivery and to prepare the pool. They both felt as though they were ignored as the team continued to watch a movie. We really truly wanted a water birth and was bummed that the pool was not prepared when it came time to push even after my husband corrected the temperature. Granted i did have a very short labor (6hrs) but i feel that if they had checked on me they would have known i was approaching my delivery quickly. The team got me and my baby here safely and i’m thankful and the follow ups went well. However, after the 6wks appointment (contractual end) they have not responded to any of my inquiries (which they aren’t obligated too). I just thought they would especially since it related to paperwork completed in there case etc and the fact that i had planned to be a repeat client. Overall the experience was blissful and i’m definitely an advocate for home birth.Just make sure you stress how important your birthing experience is.

The Office Manager is unprofessional, and does not respond in a timely manner. I called several times and was advised that I would be contacted back, only to receive an email much later advising the same thing. To make a long story short, on my third call to inquire about meeting the team, I was asked, "Do you not have another provider that you use"? I was very taken aback and shocked at the unprofessionalism. Furthermore, I was advised that they are booked through March, even though my due date is in May, which does not make any sense to me. Do they not want the business for April and May babies? So, the office manager proceeded to tell me to advise my email and she will send me a list of other midwives in Durham.....the audacity! I'm just disappointed with my experience so far. As an educated minority woman with a graduate degree in business, I did not want to write a bad review about another Sister's business. In fact, I'm most certain that she may not be aware that her Office Manager is trying to drag down her business with the way she is treating potential clients. Highly disappointed....Guess I will be having an unassisted homebirth this time.

Someone from the office should contact you within 48 hrs of the inquiry; however, we are only in the office Monday through Wednesday and sometimes get called to births. If you attempted to contact us via the website, someone should be contacting you shortly, likely via email.
