1985 was the last year it operated. They moved from there to the new center behind the old school.
Truancy, stealing, running away from home, incouragables, in the older days, one could be there because they were an orphan.
By contacting the North Carolina Department of Corrections Youth Centers or for info itself, the North Carolina State Archives. You can also sign up to be a member of the school through the many posts on the web. The school is not open to the public due to mqny hazards involved now (asbestos, floors caving in, etc.). They do have engineers working in there now to try to preserve some of the buildings.
