Home buyers beware!!! Me and my husband went through Clayton homes of Greenville SC and was able to get our monthly payment and sales agreement within two weeks after putting down 1,000$ deposit. It ended up we were not comfortable with the payment and backed out. Greenville refunded our money back that day. No problem. Fast forward a year, we noticed Anderson had a home we were interested in and since we had such a great experience with Greenville we wanted to try again. The process with Anderson was disastrous. It was drawn out months! The sales rep who says he has done this for years kept telling us he didn’t know, it doesn’t make sense, etc. We told them repeatedly we needed to know the monthly payment. I mean that is the bottom line. We told them what we were comfortable with. It ended up being at the end of it all the payment was once again to high. Me and husband looked over our budget a million times, wishing and hoping we could do it. We wanted to so badly but we ended up saying no again. When we told them we can’t go through with it. The communication immediately ended. They were not happy, they didn’t think to offer us anything else, I guess they didn’t want anything to do with us afterwards. When we asked for our deposit back they refused to give it back. They said I gave verbal consent to use our deposit for appraisal fess, that is a big FAT lie. I remember the phone call, all they said was do you give consent to do a search, never did they say I would be responsible to pay for it. We talked to our lawyer and he said we definitely have grounds to get our money back but with his fees we would end up getting nothing back. He said he would love to stick it to them if we want to or we could file a small claims suit against them. Both options are still on the table for us, but I really hope someone reads this and STAYS away so they don’t have to get put through this. I won’t trash all of Clayton homes, as I mention Greenville is WONDERFUL. Anderson seriously needs to reconsider their process. Dragging out the process to try and guilt a customer into buying the house is so shady. It was always down to the wire to get anything done… like I said a sales rep that has been doing this for years and all he could tell us was “I have no idea, this has never happened, I don’t understand” was our first clue we should of backed out. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Worst company in any area I have ever dealt with. We put down a deposit to purchase a home (which we were told was 100% refundable and even advertised on their website) went through the process and backed out prior to closing. We asked for a refund and were told that we were responsible for paying appraisal and title search fees that we never authorized. They will not take or return our calls after we cancelled the contract, all the while we kept asking them and telling them we need to see our payment and they refused to tell us what it would be until the very end of the process. The manager Michael is terrible, and so is the sales rep Ryan Freeman. Very shady and unethical business practices. I would rather be homeless than buy a home from any Clayton homes anywhere in the country. If I could give negative stars I would, I am currently starting the legal process to recoup our money.
