As its name suggests, the fuel injector in a car delivers fuel from the tank to the engine. As air comes through the engine air filter, the injector’s nozzle sprays a fine mist of gasoline, mixing the two together and preparing them for combustion. Problems occur when fuel varnish or other debris begins to accumulate on the nozzle, blocking the spray. Dirty fuel injectors can lead to weak spray or uneven patterns—a definite detriment when your engine needs a precise combination of air and fuel in order to perform well.
The oil in an engine is inevitably exposed to products of internal combustion, including microscopic soot particles that accumulate in the engine during operation. Tiny flecks of metal are also produced by engine parts rubbing together. All of these particles circulate in the oil and grind against the surfaces of various engine parts, causing wear. The oil also undergoes significant thermal and mechanical degradation.
Neglecting to replace your differential fluid can lead to gear corrosion. Regular auto service can help prevent differential failure.
In four-wheel-drive vehicles, the transfer case divides the engine’s power between the front and rear axles. Fluid breakdown can lead to transfer case failure.
The best way to prevent the buildup of engine sludge is to change your oil frequently and to install the correct engine oil filters in your vehicle. Engine sludge forms when the oil in your engine begins to degrade, forming a deposit of unwanted materials on the engine’s parts. This degradation happens due to oxidation, a process by which the oil’s chemistry begins to break down.
Engines generate power by pulling in air and mixing it with fuel, which is then compressed and ignited. The easier it is for an engine to “breathe,” the more power it can generate. A clogged engine air filter can lead to the following problems: - Decreased gas mileage - Lower horsepower - Ignition problems - Increased engine deposits
