Stopped here since I was had issues with the breaks on my car when going down hill (was very scary). I was so shaken up but, a very sweet lady named Linda came to make sure I was fine. I found out you can come to this ranger station and get permits for various recreational activities that require them. You can get information on different activities, they have a map showing the different hiking trails they have. It is a neat place to go check out. The staff is great, specially Linda.

The rangers were amazingly helpful, and made the visit to this park such a great experience. I recommend visiting and getting all the help they can give.

I realize the budget cuts, but this service is useless unless there is a person actually THERE. If California can't fund these stations, you should just close up permanently. It's useless the way it is now.

Had the most wonderful experience hiking this trail. It is absolutely breath taking and so quite. We took the walk right before sunset. It was a little chilly so bring a warm blanket or sweatshirt. Enjoy the scenery while hand in hand with that special someone. Perfect spot for a Date

You would be taking a chance, sleep yes. For camping, I had to go way north to there Mineral site. Still cheaper than hotel
At upper Lake clementines, or the Quarry parking area, and hike to end of trail where it opens up,and there are portable pottys, and tables. But no BBQing(grilling) allowed. Because of the fire danger. Also at Clark's hole,on the Clementines trail just as you go under the Foresthill bridge, or at the Confluence under the curved bridge.
There is limited parking in front of the main office. All other parking is for staff. Parking is free by the office.
Yes the main trails are, offshoots not so well maintained.
You can gold pan. Hands and pans only. No equipment is allowed. More information can be found at https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=502
Yes, in the designated hunting areas during the appropriate season. Inquire at the headquarters for details.
The trails are fairly mellow all 3 directions on the south sides of the river for a couple miles. With kids the easiest / safest trail is the gravel access road that goes along the south side of the middle fork American river. Parking for that one is about 1/4 mile up HWY 49 towards Cool. Everything @confluence is out and back unless you want ~6+ mile hike. Make sure to look at the map and stop at the kiosk/bathrooms @confluence and speak with the ranger before heading out with kids. If you are a fit hiker then just go for it. There is NO DRINKING WATER down there so make sure you take more than you think you need with you.
