Yes. They are very flexible with tour times to show you around but we have walked around alone too.
No. There's a beautiful Bed and Breakfast about 5-7 min away in East Hampton called The Bevin House. It's gorgeous. It's on Barton Hill. I know people who celebrate at the castle often stay here.

Sorry; it depends on your definition of "affordable". St. Clements Castle is a high-end wedding venue. They do an extremely important and difficult job, and they do it extremely well. If you are on a budget, you probably should not consider St. Clements Castle.
There is the Inn at Middletown, The Red Lion in Cromwell and the Courtyard Marriott in Cromwell. All between 10-15 minutes away.
Look to Cromwell, CT for the hotels that match with the typical national credit card/AAA promotions.
