Cook and Gardener is hands down the best around for quality of plants, exceptional customer service, and inventory. They have a team of employees that are a true wealth of gardening knowledge.

There are baby robins that just hatched among some of the plants. This place has a huge selection of, annuals, perennials, and houseplants. My go to when it comes planting anything.

Questions & Answers

Do you carry Hyderanga's and when is the best time to plant them?. do they do well in area with many pine trees?

Sally Kamerling | Sep 22, 2020
Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2020

Hi Sally, We carry many different types of Hydrangeas and most of them you can plant right until the ground freezes. The toughest type for our region are called the Panicle Hydrangeas. They are bloom everywhere now (early Sept.). Two very popular types are the large 'Limelight' and the small 'Bobo'. An area with pine trees will be fine as long as they are not in deep shade. With 6+ hours of direct sun they will be quite happy.

Does this place have any Pilea peperomioides by chance? If so, ball park price?

Yes, i got 2 there in the Spring. But, like most nurseries inventory is not always the same. Costs run between $14 -$20 depending on size.

do you sell houseplants....looking for African violets

Sharon LaRose | Sep 22, 2021
Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2021

Hi Sharon. My apologies for not replying sooner. Yes, we do typically have a good selection of both foliage and flowering houseplants in a variety of sizes. Admittedly, this year has been difficult in what's been available to buy in. Houseplants certainly gained in popularity when people spent so much more time at home during the covid lockdowns! What we currently have in stock is discounted at 30% off. There are a couple of African Violets as part of the sale, but currently out-of-bloom. Hopefully we will be able to get some new stock delivered in the coming weeks. Hope that info is helpful.

Hi Mitzi. I believe you've been contacted by phone with the answer, but in general our rhubarb plants will be ready for sale in a few weeks. Thanks for your inquiry.

Do you sell compost in bulk?

ROBERT BERGERON | Sep 22, 2021
Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2021

Good morning, Robert. We only sell bagged soil, compost and mulch products here at the garden center. Almost all of our bagged products all have quantity discounted price points. When you buy 5 or more of any given item, the price drops. These products are all displayed at the edge of our parking lot. Thank you for your inquiry.

Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2020

Good afternoon. Unfortunately, we have already sold out of poppies this season. We sometimes have a pink one called 'Victoria Louise' but this season we just had the red and orange/red varieties. Sorry we couldn't help with your request today.

Are we allowed in the store for shopping

Rose Girard | Sep 22, 2020
Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2020

Yes, we are open for in-store shopping. We have changed our parking lot to a closed system with just 15 available spots to prevent overcrowding in the store. So when you arrive you just join the line of cars waiting (if any) along the black fencing and the parking attendant will let you know when there is a spot available. We have a one-way traffic system in the greenhouses to keep things flowing smoothly. For nursery yard shopping there is a new outdoor checkout booth. Masks are required and we have a contactless pay system in place. Our current hours are 11AM-6PM daily, but usually the afternoon has the smoothest flow of cars in/out of the parking lot with shorter wait times. The system has worked for us to keep our staff and customers feeling comfortable and safe.

Last Friday I purchased 13 sunpatients plants, none one of them has bloomed yet, any explanation as to why?

Linda LaBombard | Sep 22, 2020
Cook and Gardener | Sep 22, 2020

Hi Linda. The SunPatiens were a young batch, so that would be one issue. They will get to blooming phase soon. The other issue would be this extreme heat. In general, the plants won't do much when it gets this hot. They should resume active growth and bloom set once the temps regulate in a couple days. We are all looking forward to a break from this May heatwave!

Did your 'Russian Sage' come in yet please ??

No I wish it did.

Do you have natural mulch? If yes is it by large bags? Or do you have it in bulk?

Journey “Ranger” Zazzy | Sep 23, 2019
Cook and Gardener | Sep 23, 2019

Yes, we carry shredded cedar mulch in extra large 3 cubic foot bags. We stock natural cedar, as well as, colored cedar mulch in red, black and dark brown. Please call us at (518) 563-9308 and we would be happy to provide our pricing. We always have a quantity discount for purchasing 5 or more bags. And for reference, it takes 9 bags to equal 1 cubic yard (if comparing to bulk pricing elsewhere). Thank you for your inquiry.

Would you happen to have different colors of asters ??

Tina Tucker | Sep 23, 2018
Cook and Gardener | Sep 23, 2018

Hi Tina, At the moment we have very few perennial Asters. We do have some nice purple/blue decorative asters that are just coming into bloom (like the fall mums - from hardy origins, but bred for lots of flowers and not winter hardiness).

Do you have any hydrangeas? And if so are they in full bloom or in seed form?

Kate Nichols | Sep 23, 2018
Bob Bever | Sep 23, 2018

They do have hydrangeas. They had some when we visited earlier. Some are blooming already but i don't think they have any seeds in stock.
