Unfortunately in the eyes of your insurance company it is not possible to make your existing garage door hurricane proof for the purpose of gaining a discount on your homeowner policy. The only way to get a discount is to purchase an hurricane code door from a licensed garage door contractor who will pull the required building permits, install according to the building code and have the building department perform a final inspection to ensure the door has been installed properly. Wind resistant hurricane code doors are significantly different than your standard door in many ways. The door track, door panels, hinges, rollers are all constructed of a heavier gauge steel than standard doors. In addition to stronger door materials the manner in which it is attached the building is stronger as well.
