I can't say enough good things about New Horizon Karate. It has been such a positive self-esteem building experience for my daughter. She has learned so much already and is excited for more!! The communication is amazing, classes are well structured and the staff is very professional and friendly especially Jim. He is kind, caring, and supportive. I highly recommend New Horizon Karate👍🏼❤️

My 5-year-old son has been attending classes at New Horizon for a couple of months now, and he loves it! Jim is wonderful with the kids, focusing on self-sufficiency and respect in addition to the physical training of karate. He sends out newsletters and updates on progress regularly. The schedule is great and there are classes every day of the week. It's been a great experience for us as parents and also for our son!

I went to New Horizon Karate while in college for Jujitsu and absolutely loved it. The teaching style and environment is very comfortable and effective, and even at that time I noticed how amazing Jim is with the younger students. Now that I am a parent, I am happy to be sending my son there and he just loves it. It has helped reduce his anxiety during the pandemic, provided him with a means of healthy exercise/activity, and is constructively building his confidence. I also appreciate the compliance with pandemic precautions and the dojo is always kept very clean. I highly recommend New Horizon for both children and adults!

I signed my 6 year old son up for Karate lessons to help him manage his anxiety and build confidence. Jim was INCREDIBLE in helping my son feel comfortable and safe. My son looks forward to each of his lessons.

In tournament fighting or any one on one match you know where you opponent is and how many there are. In self defense you may be confronted from behind or by more than one attacker. Being aware of you surroundings is very important in self defense because by nature are not defined. Also rules don't apply. The only rule is self defense is to survive and get out of there.
Yes, this is one of the better time to start. Classes are still small and we have multiple instructors. Adults or children can try our Introductory Month and see how they like our programs. Students will learn basic self defense right from the first day.
We began teaching in West Boylston in 1986. Instructors are master level, that means they have at least 20yr. experience in the martial arts. Children or lower level Black Belt do not run classes or programs, they help the master instructor. Our program was designed by Master Alty with more than 46 yrs. of training & teaching. We have created program for children with physical and social challenges as well as a great self defense program for everyone. Master Alty tests and certifies each of the students for skill development. Belts are not based on attendance. Our students can defend themselves if they need to. Big egos are allowed. Each student is important to us not a dollar sign.
Many karate school’s use any black belt to teach. Teaching requires an understanding of the movements and the how and why things are taught not just the move. The moves without understanding a just moves and are effective on a simple level. Sensei: means “one who came before” or has walked the path before and often used to indicate a fully capable teacher (usually given to high level 2nd or 3rd degree black belts but can be given later). This denotes experience and understanding of the structure. Sensei is an awarded title of respect and experience. Not all black belts are Senseis.
There is much after receiving a Black Belt (Shodan). Black Belt is a big step in the martial arts. It recognizes that you have learned all of the prerequisite skills necessary to begin the next more advanced stage. There are ten levels in most martial arts systems. After black belt they are referred to as dan ranks or degrees of black belt. Each has requirements and great understanding.
Yes, we are offering two different present packages. $35.00 for one month (one class per week) plus a free uniform and belt. or $99.00 for 2 months(unlimited classes) free uniform, free registration, and free training guide.
Martial arts movement work the entire body in a coordinated movement not unlike swimming. Using both sides of the body engages both sides of the brain. Coordination, balance, spacial awareness, concentration and overall improved control over their environment will help with other aspects of life.
Any time, we are a full time year round program. Classes tend to be smaller in the summer and around the holidays. We never let our classes get to big. When a beginner class gets more than 4 or 5 people we add to our schedule. We usually have a Master Instructor (more than 20 years experience) and an assistant or two. This way the beginner student get a strong foundation from which to build on. We are not successful unless the student is successful. Strong foundation, fun, and great self defense.
Yes, many people sign up for the holidays and will start after the new year begins. We want you to get the most out of our program. You choose your start date. I hope you have a great holiday season. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Yes, we have and Christmas Package that includes a uniform to wrap up and put under the tree. This package includes a uniform, belt, workbook, and 2 months of lessons. Students can come as much as they want up to 5 days a week. Call (508) 852-3333 today and we will give you a uniform when you sign up.
Yes, we have a closed circuit television set up so the students can focus on the instructor in a more private setting. In this way the students are not putting on a show for the lobby. We find student learn better without that distraction but we want parents to be comfortable with what we do.
I have heard of karate schools that teach fighting and violence. They are not the normal. Most program teach restraint. Some focus on ring or tournament fighting and some like New Horizon Karate focuses on self defense and personal development. A great master Gichin Funakoshi wrote “The Ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the development of character of practitioner.” We have a character development program and anti bullying program that linked to character traits like courage, respect, perseverance to the belt ranks.
We keep our classes small and will add classes if they grow to much. Most beginner classes are about 3 to 5 students. Our instructors have years of teaching experience and most classes are run by a black belt with more than 20 years in the martial arts. We focus on proper technique and skill development. Student are kept focused on the instructor and not just running around. Classes are fun but structured.
None, all style have merit. I really depends on what you are looking for and what you like to do. Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and MMA they are all great. Some more for health, some self defense and some for tournament or competition but all will
Children or juniors begin at 4 to 5 years. Children have to understand we tell them to punch and kick, then tell them not to. Starting a child a 2, 3, and some children at 4 can cause more problems then they solve. New Horizon Karate will have your child come in for a trial (evaluation class) to see if we think they can understand not to punch or kick someone for taking their toy. We have had rare success with some 3 almost 4 year olds. Also some places are making karate for young children a game not real classes taught by martial artists with experience that gives the children the wrong idea.
Their is a short and long answer. Each student learns and develops at their own rate. Somewhere between 3 to 5 years for and adult or teen and a little longer for children. New Horizon Karate only give belts based on skill development not attendance. If you get a belt based on attendance you won't have the skills when you need them. Self Defense and True Achievement take effort.
New Horizon Karate in West Boylston has a unique program for children with Autism and Hyperactivity. These classes are held on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays mornings. We keep the classes small with several instructors and helpers. This is a unique program with these kids in mind. We do not just put them in the regular classes. We combine martial arts movements with brain gym and developmental exercises. The classes are structured to help students learn about space, balance, coordination and how to deal with others. Students learn also self defense techniques that are appropriate.
Class schedule is posted on website. Changes from time to time but classes are offered often during the week and Saturdays.
