Got my black pup 12 yrs ago. Grew big, 90 lbs, strong, a little hard headed. 7 months old retrieved 6 full grown geese from a lake blind, some more than 1/2 mile down lake. Good on grouse, poor on retrieve, could never learn to watch the fall. After 4 yrs, something was wrong with him. Off to vet for a week, diagnosis, Addison's disease. Took to UW Madison Veterinary clinic. Same diagnosis, switched medication from pile of pills everyday to 1 pill/day plus 1 shot/month and prescription food. About $2000/yr at our local vet, definitely down price from the city. 8 yrs later, several minor crisis, kidneys failed. He was able to hunt well until he was 8, marginal till 10. Addison's is a genetic disorder.
