Employees were rude, obnoxious, and hostile. I can empathize with social service employees becoming jaded or suffering from compassion fatigue, but that is no reason to treat visitors so poorly. If someone comes to your center asking for help, you should tell them how and whether you can help. You should not tell them they have to drive in at a certain time, make them wait a half hour, and then, finally, tell them you can't help and you do not assist with unemployment applications. If you do not assist with unemployment applications, you should have told me when I called—but instead you told me to drive in for 12:45 p.m.—or you should have told me when I showed up at 12:30, but instead you had me sit an wait for a half hour. Finally, at 1:10, you announced that everyone (we all had been waiting for 30+ minutes) who was there for assistance applying for unemployment should go home because you do not offer assistance or even answer questions about filing for unemployment. Staff were also dismissive and rude to a lady who was also there seeking help with her application. She had applied several times and did not get a reply. Your response was to tell her to go home and try filling it out again. Even if that is the only pathway for her, which is horrible, you need to treat her with compassion. She was nearly in tears, so frustrated by this system that does not work. Then, to add insult to injury, the staff were not compassionate or sympathetic when telling me they couldn't assist with an application. Instead, they were rude, hostile, and belittling. "Anyone with a basic education can fill out an application. You don't need our help." Are you kidding me? The staff did not apologize for mistakenly telling me to come in and did not apologize for mistakenly telling me to sit and wait a half hour. When I pointed out the CT DOL website lists this location as a place where you can go from 1-3 p.m. on Fridays to get help filling out the application, staff said, "We cannot control with the CT DOL puts on their website." I can't believe staff who behave like that are allowed to work there. You should be polite, kind, considerate, and compassionate, not rude, obnoxious. You should never belittle people who come for help—help that you are supposed to provide. You should never suggest they are idiots if they do not understand or have the info needed to navigate the complex, buggy online unemployment application.

The program you're referring to is called REACH.
Technically yes. They like you to have gone through their intake program to use the facilities. Just go to the library. Free there.
