I had a boss who once said "under promise and over deliver". My experience with Carriage House so far is exactly the opposite "Over promise and Under deliver" My Dad moved into Carraige House two weeks ago today. Carriage House has good Google reviews and came recommended by "A place for Mom". Our experience has not met expectations or the promises of the sales person we met with. First, this is a nice place. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and welcoming. A number of things haven't gone as expected: 1. Food - They have a big sign indicating locally sourced food when you come into the lobby. This gives the impression that they care about it. Food is at best inconsistent. Meal times, which are supposed to be 8 AM, Noon and 5 PM can vary by as much as an hour. Food is sometimes hot, often not. Residents are expected to fill out menus for the next day's meals. These are just "suggestions" as what is served doesn't necessarily resemble the menu the resident filled out the previous day and some items are just missing. 2. My Dad uses the internet for banking. I've been asking for the resident wifi password for two weeks. No correct password has been provided. My texts are not responded to and I have to re-initiate the conversation. Not satisfactory. 3. Fees - When we discussed the costs, we were told about the monthly cost. When it came time to move in, we were "surprised" by a $2,000 move in fee. This should be discussed up front. Knowing what I know now, I would have kept looking. I would not recommend Carraige House and I would definitely not believe anything they promise during the sales process.

Do not send your loved ones here! The sales lady is a good communicator but the regular staff is painfully slow to respond to concerns. Our calls and emails were not returned for days from any staff member. None of them have personal voicemail. The front desk attendant answers the phone and always tells you the staff is busy and you must leave a message through her but then you are never called back. Our loved one was told to stay in the bedroom for almost a year due to covid - like a prisoner who was even given food in her room in solitary confinement for a year! When we finally were allowed in our loved one’s room, 50 pounds of old food was hoarded and not thrown away by any staff member. Old butter, old jelly, etc, and things that could make one sick. We could tell our loved one was not ever changing her clothes since she was always dressed the same on our FaceTime calls. We were told she was an independent dresser and bather, but when we were allowed in her room after a year, no shampoo was in the shower and none had been touched for a year. No toothpaste was being used either because she could no longer bathe herself or clean herself due to dementia. We moved her to a nicer home and they assist her with bathing and brushing teeth. I can’t believe how neglected she was at Carriage House. They used covid to confine clients in their rooms for a whole year.

Although disappointed to learn that Carriage House Senior Living was not a skilled nursing facility, I was awed by the assistance given to me by Tressa Hogan. She took the time to point me in the right direction, something that I felt went above and beyond. An excellent representative of Carriage House.

Questions & Answers

When I visit assisted living communities with my daughter, I find it all a little intimidating. Moving from a small house to a big community is frightening. I just don’t know if I can learn my way around a new place.

My father needs more help than we can provide for him to be safe at home. I think he realizes it but is reluctant to leave the friends he’s made in his neighborhood. Dad has lived there for about 25 years. What can we do to reassure him he can stay connec

Good question! Embarking on a new chapter in life doesn’t mean old friends have to be left behind. Assisted living communities offer a wide range of programs and events residents can invite guests to participate in. And they also offer transportation services so your dad can attend events in and around town with his old buddies. Fortunately, there are other ways your father can stay in touch. Social media channels like Facebook or a video chat service such as Skype are two easy avenues for staying connected.

My mom agreed that it was time for her to move to an assisted living community this winter. She knows she just isn’t safe living alone any longer. We found a community Mom seemed to love. Now we can’t seem to get her motivated to actually make the move. I

This sometimes happen when it actually comes time to make the move. Your mom is probably anxious and a little uncertain. A late life transition like this isn’t easy to make. What might help is to get her involved in some of the events and activities at the new community now, instead of waiting until she actually moves in. Talk with the staff to see about helping her find a buddy with similar interests and hobbies that she can bond with during her visits. Becoming more familiar with the community and with a few fellow residents can help make the move feel a little less intimidating.

My children live out of town and have busy lives. I know I need to move to a senior living community but I don’t want to burden my children with downsizing my house. What can I do? It’s overwhelming to think about doing it all on my own.

We hear this concern from seniors often. Sorting through and packing up a lifetime of memories and belongings can be overwhelming. One resource we like to share with families is a group of professionals called Senior Move Managers. They are experts at handling all of the details of a later life move. You can find one near your home by visiting the National Association of Senior Move Managers or Certified Relocation & Transition Specialist.
