What a wonderful organization! The director, Jessica, and her amazing staff have taken a Vineyard staple and made it a successful fund raising arm of community services while maintaining the island vibe. A successful retail business, helping reuse and recycle all our stuff, and offering bargains for everyone. Always worth a visit

Many people shop at thrift stores because they will not or can not pay retail prices. You would think that all people would be made to feel comfortable at Chicken Alley considering how they boast their community service. I was happy to find 5 lovely wine glasses priced $4 each on my last visit. I took them to the counter so I could continue to shop around. When I returned to pay, another customer (let’s call her Karen) told an employee that the glasses were worth more than they were marked. A employee took the glasses from me and they were held hostage in the back while a group of employees had a LENTGHY conversation, leaving me standing there. When the manager returned, I was told the if I wanted them, I had to pay $50 each! They had no issue with humiliating me loudly in front of other customers. When I suggested that they honored the price marked by their staff, I was presented with “Where does it say that?” And “this is a charity”, as well as, “We need volunteers, if you think you know better!”. I guess they lost sight that the “community” that they SERVE works for an income. Everyone doesn’t have the PRIVILEGE to volunteer or to be over charged in the name on charity. They never have been listed on their website like I was told they would be. Maybe someone will be toasting to MVCS with them tonight. I would skip this out of touch “charity” on your next trip to Martha’s Vineyard!

Please, off-island visitors. Be civil and generous! And, DO NOT ABUSE the workers/volunteers at the counter. to haggle by changing price sticker of $2 to $1. That is being CHEAP! The staff here are really working for "the community" in mind, and, many of them are volunteers! And, we are proud of them and what they have done for years and decades. Please, be supportive, and, thankful.
