Really neat place! If you're heat sensitive, I suggest visiting in the cooler months because though it is air conditioned, only the office and fourth floor warden's apartment are cool. There is a lot to see - we were there for 2 hours and to be honest I'd have liked to stay longer because I didn't get a chance to read some of the stuff. When you're in the check in office, be sure to take advantage of the solitary confinement cage - my uncle stood inside it and I went around to the other side and got some fun photos. You can also have someone close the door while you're in there (it doesn't lock) and see just how small and cramped the solitary would have been. All the displays have a lot of information, so be ready to read! Also, important to know, the public bathroom is one of the original bathrooms, which I thought was fun.

Questions & Answers

How did it turn?

Richard Ekstrom | Sep 13, 2021
Dawn Overton | Sep 13, 2021

The jail turns with a hand crank. The steel bars of the jail are stationary, only the inside turns.. The idea of the jail was to have only one jailer and one matron. By turning the crank the matron could pass a tray thru to each pie shaped cell.

Wonder how many people died in there

One inmate fell to his death, one officer died of natural causes, and I believe an inmate committed suicide. There may have been 1 more but that's it.

How'd they go to the bathroom?

Danielle Beysson | May 16, 2022
Beth Terry | May 16, 2022

They had little holes for the toilet in each cell but not with running water. It had a lid at least but I'm sure it didn't smell the best.

Would this be ok for a person to go to who has limited mobility? They can walk, but walk with a cane and cant walk a long way.

If someone in your group has limited mobility this probably isn't the place for them. There are a lot of stairs and narrow walkways. You visit 3 floors and the jailers living quarters.

A couple. One guy climbed to the top of the cells in the hang out area to write his name on the ceiling. They had a catwalk up there, he took a nap and fell off in his sleep. It is a great place to ghost hunt that is for sure. I always leave with evps.
