The initial climb up the granite steps was a bit slippery. Reaching the first open level was awe inspiring..As we reached the top lookout, the views were spectacular. For those who have problems with heights, (such as myself)hold onto the railing with both hands (which I did). There is a 360• view of the Boston skyline. This is a great place to explore!

Be sure to climb to the top! Panoramic views of the city and the stone staircase is fun :). The tower is closed in the winter months though.

Maybe it’s the Momento Mori as you move past the graves. It’s an opportunity to think of those you love— and what you have. Sobering thankfulness, the good fortune to observe the engraved stone and to be shaded by generational old trees. Tranquil. I feel this is the word that best describes how I felt visiting Washington Tower and the Cemetery. A return to nature, a silence nested in the city. The tower is located in the center of the Mount Auburn Cemetery. The grounds are beautiful and well worth parking outside and walking through. I would not recommend driving to the tower, you will miss out on so much of this space and what I described above. The tower takes you above the trees where you will feel the wind move through your clothing and hair. Well worth the assent up the tower of stairs. Maybe the intent was to give the observer the perception of transcendence. Or maybe, it’s just a cool place to visit and enjoy.
