Beautiful forest, perfect for hiking though not particularly well marked on the trails at times. Experienced hikers will enjoy the scenery as well as the choices of hiking locations to go to.

Yes but, there is private land pretty much throughout the entire boundaries of the forest. The headquarters offices have a couple different kind of topo maps you can purchase. All you need is an idea of where you want to hunt, look for the corresponding quadrant and county amd purchase one. I think you can buy them online too. A lot of places are not marked "private" so, its best to make absolutely sure its Forest land you're hunting on to avoid any problems. Hope this helps!
Most areas are free. Others range from 10-25 and up.
Yes. Check online with the forestry service for any details.
It's still cold 40s-50s. But can get warmer and drop down colder with snow. Generally it's starting to get rainy a day or two outa the month. I prefer my hiking when it's cool and have found days good for it starting this month.
The National Forest is free in unimproved areas. You can stay up to 14 days in one spot. If you are really clean and not a nuisance you might get away with staying a little longer.
It is free to enter the park it is not free to camp
78 degrees as a high 55 low

While I have not visited, I understand that it is a bluff called Crow Knob near Miller Grove. It is said that fires were lit there as a signal for runaway slaves seeking safe passage.
Wet but the trails are beautiful with the water flowing in the creeks. Not a time to horseback ride though trails are to muddy. Bring your boots and have a wonderful time. Oh and evertything is blooming! Great for pictures!
Shawnee as you know is a huge geography, its the entire southern tip of Illinois on either side of I57. On the eastern side it lies between Ohio river and I57 and on the Western Side its between I57 and Mississippi. Aprox about 80 mile wide and 70 mile long till the tip of Illinois where Ohio meets Mississippi. There are plenty of Lodging spread across the Geography, so you need to decide what are your area of interest and may be get a lodging close to that. I personally stay at Cave In Rock state park cabins, just because of the view from the cabin on to the Ohio River and Kentucky river valleys across. It also has a nice Restaurant, and on the western side of the forest is the Giant City State Park Lodge with a Restaurant, this is closer to Carbondale. Giant City ine has more Cabins than Cabe in Rock, which normally wuld cost $150 And there are many Private cabins with same price which also has all Kitchen utensils to cook.
Average Weather in March in Carbondale Illinois, United States Daily high temperatures increase by 11°F, from 52°F to 63°F, rarely falling below 36°F or exceeding 77°F.
High of 60° and sunny until later this afternoon, then party cloudy.
Yes
U can pull ur vehicle right up anywhere almost where u r cmaping
We had a camper, the first time we did tents. We didn't see any cabins at the place.
Lots of hiking at burden falls & Jackson hole
March is a volatile mounth, would still be in low 30s, up to 60. Fluctuates a good deal
Im not sure but you can look it up online at www.usfs.gov
Yeah I don't know why you couldn't but it's fixing to be shotgun season for deer and there will be people everywhere
Yes any type of car will do; I have made it in some very tiny cars 😀
Go to the rangers office in Vienna. They will give you a map of the trails. They are color coded as to what the trail can be used for.
Yes
Jackson Falls
So many caves try sand cave and Shawnee Saltpetre Cave
Yes
Anywhere that isn't posted/ marked otherwise is freely open for basic tent camping. Countless campsites along the river to river trail. Most have fire wood in camp leftover from previous campers. Please use cat holes for human waste and take all the rest out!
There are cabin rentals in sporadic places near the Shawnee National Forest. Also there are hotels in various towns throughout Southern Illinois that one could stay at and be in a 20 to 30 minute drive away. You can also tent camp in various primitive campgrounds that are actually in the forest.
As in drinking the water? Sure can. The water is clean stream water.
Well 55 to 65 but in some natural formations your able to walk in its mabe 52 to 49.
Always, always check the weather forecast before an outing. Be it an overnight camping or even a day hike. It can be rather cool early on then be warmer later. When in some of the Canyon areas the temp can cool off more. Plan ahead & prepare.
Archery starts in October. Look on the illinois department of natural resources website for exacts on everything
No you don't need a thing besides the coggins test to cross state lines.
No cliff diving! Cost for camp varies, but there are many camping sites. There are bathrooms space between sites and picnic areas. We went swimming in a lake, there are NO pools
Glendale lake has a beach you can swim in.
Plenty of places. Pound Hollow, Rim Rock Trail is pet friendly. We just came back from Garden of the Gods, and took our dog, for 4 days
Giant City state park has great camper sites and the Giant City Lodge restaurant!
Swimming is offered at Pounds Hollow (NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY), it's a lake. There is a lake at Glendale and a pool at Dixon Springs
Hiking and horses.
Ferne Clyffe near Goreville is accessible. There is one dip that may have a little water running over it to go through. It is a small chat covered trail back to the falls. The Tunnel Hill State trail would be great for a wheel chair. Park at Tunnel Hill and the tunnel is about a quarter mile south.
There is good mushroom hunting throughout the Shawnee Forest. Foraging in the Shawnee Forest doesnt require a permit unless it is a commercial plant.
Temperature should be fine by then and your camper should be fine also, it is a beautiful area
No, not on any trails or roads. But we do it anyway.
