The only way that you can pull the cord is if the spring (located above the door) is intact. Once you get the door open and closed, you can reengage the door by pulling up the emergency cable, to lock it back into place. If the spring is broken however and you pull the cord, the door will slam shut and will not be able to open until the spring is replaced.
