2022 Experience - Brought kid 2 this year. Like the first, he is 11 and was a little worried about learning. Bob and Heather provided the same in-depth experience and treated him like an adult. Putting together a full gear set 12 times (correctly), it was actually about 16-17 times but he had a few mistakes. Hours of pool session working basic skills and then 4 ocean dives to further work skills. The boy is so proud now. Bob is always knowledgeable, always hard working, always on top of things, and provides local color commentary like no other. He was treated as part of the crew when we dove the Narcosis Dive Boat and was always willing to lend the crew a hand. Like my last experience, I cant say enough about Sunshine Scuba school. Other adult divers on the boat commented on my boy's buoyancy control and how good it was. "thanks Bob!" If you want to coast and get a "quick cert" look somewhere else. If you want you or your kids to actually learn and have skills this is your place. And for people in my age group you will appreciated Bob's "old School" approach. My 11 year old called commented the "old gold is best." Will be back with kid 3 soon and looking forward to move dives with Bob. 2019 Experience - My 11 year old took his first dive in the Red Sea earlier this summer. He loved it. We planned to spend most of August in Clearwater Beach so we decided to get him certified while there. My wife found Sunshine and signed him up without ever having met Bob or Heather face to face. our boy took the on-line portions before we traveled to the area. As soon as I met Bob I knew we would get along. There was no coasting in the class or treating him like a kid. Bob expected him to learn all the skills just as if he were an adult. He set a high bar and expected it would be met. this included class room, pool session, mental and emotional maturity, and physical strength. This included setting up and breaking down different sets of gear 12 times since we told Bob we were likely to be using rental gear. I appreciated that Bob wanted to make sure our boy was prepared for any situation that might arise. I was travelling in and out of Clearwater for work travel and Bob was quite flexible and worked with us to ensure we had everything completed before we had to leave. He met us 3 hours north of Clearwater for two dives in a spring, adjusted when the weather didn't cooperate, and arranged a charter boat to some ocean dives where we saw two Goliath groupers (AWESOME). Through it all Heather was also there to give an encouraging word and ask him questions to help him retain the knowledge. If you are looking for a quick cert and to coast through, you best find another shop. If you want to learn about diving in FL, be sure you are prepared, and hear some great stories about cave diving and diving history in FL this is the place for you. I will be bringing back my other kids when they are old enough. and I am certain Bob will make sure they are prepared and improve my skills as well.
