The DMV is universally hated, and in the case of NY's Tompkins County DMV, that reputation is entirely unwarranted. I was impressed with their staff's friendly, quick, and helpful responsiveness during my first phone call to them upon moving to NY state and the Ithaca the area for the first time in 2010, and my visit there this morning (12 years, 2 state residency changes, and 3 addresses later) was just as straightforward. I have only rarely ever had to wait in any line worth noting, and even this morning, with a line literally out the door that I stood in twice (that's on me; I hadn't filled out a necessary form the first time I got to the window), I didn't wait more than 10 minutes total. That line moves FAST! Everybody I've interacted with at the Tompkins County DMV has been happy to answer questions and help me efficiently navigate what can sometimes be a confusing bureaucratic process. I've held driver's licenses and registered vehicles in 4 states, and I've had my share of horror stories about visits to other DMVs that have swallowed an entire day or more, but stopping by this one when I need to update or register anything for my license or vehicles is consistently the quickest and easiest errand on my list. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but the more smooth transactions I have here, the less I suspect that my experience might be an outlier. I now live in Tioga county, but I still drive to Tompkins county for my DMV needs because of my confidence that I'll have a simple, painless, and effective visit there.

People there are really friendly. I was there at 9am Monday and only waited 5 minutes in line.

I reapplied for my license 11 years after my Nevada one expired. The process was fair, enlightened, and made me a better driver. The road tester was strict but also fair. This is not the DMV occupied by Marge's acrimonious sisters in The Simpsons. It's the Tompkins County DMV.

I checked 12/30 for hours and hours showed open on New Year’s Eve, I then drive 30 minutes after securing babysitter so can get truck re-registered and ask a few questions. I show up on 31st (New Years Eve)and you post a closed sign on door. Update your hours please, it’s 2021 and just in posting this message I’ve watched 4 separate customers walk up thinking same thing. Is unacceptable.

In the beginning of July I went online to schedule an appointment for registration. The soonest appointment they had was the end of August. They also have the option to drop your info into the drop box at the door. I literally had my new registration within 4 days. You can ask any questions you have to the individual who comes out checking on the appointment people. The gentleman was extremely helpful.
