Clear trail, clean, not crowded. My favorite trail in the area!

We went on the days the flies were at their worst. The trail was poorly marked, but I may not have done a good job researching where to go. We were looking for Lock 19, but started too far down and were irritated by the flies. We did like the historical things we got to see like the barge/boat repair spot.

This place is great! The parking lot is not huge but it’s never a problem. Lots odd well maintained trails for all ages. I have seen many birds here including great blue herons, vultures, many types of sparrows, ducks, geese, mergansers, and many other birds. I have also seen deer, turtles, and rabbits.

This nature preserve is absolutely beautiful. It contains a mixture of gravel and dirt paths, many miles of them. Bring your dog for an awesome on leash walk experience, or ride your bike on the flat gravel. There is easy access parking, but it does get busy on sunny days and weekends. This is a fantastic location for bird watching, especially with the water features of the canal and creek. There are no facilities, however - no bathrooms, water, or playgrounds. There is also no garbage can -- whatever you bring in with you you take out. Although I don't think grilling is allowed, there is one picnic table available at the parking area.

They are 100%. I brought my 4 year old who is not afraid of snakes, but I'm petrified. Keep an eye out. We ran into one, and he/she was not afraid of us 😳.

Would not be great for a big wedding though, both parking and space for chairs and such is limited.

Can you kayak on the water

Yes, it's allowed but most of the waters in the nature preserve and the old canal system are overrun with algae, water chestnut, and downed trees making it not great for paddling. There's a kayak launch at the parking lot by the vischers ferry fire department that leads into the Mohawk River. There's another river launch on Clamsteam road right by The Klamr. I've heard of people launching from Clute's Drydock but never tried it myself. The river water has been very low recently.
