I have been going to this store for many years and had always had positive experiences. However, I have been in there twice since the new owners took over and I am very disappointed and will NEVER return or recommend this store to anyone. I was in last Thursday and bought two items - one has been my favorite Tennessee Whisky for many years, George Dickel No. 12. I returned home and shortly after made a Dickel and Ginger mixed drink with a twist of lime. I noticed that the cap was a slightly different color than normal but that has nothing to do with the whisky (so I thought). I took a sip and the taste was horrible and was NOT No. 12. I thought maybe I had Covid again and my taste was affected so I tasted a few other things and my taste was fine. I took another sip - it was not right. I poured a small amount in a separate glass and smelled it - almost pure ethanol with a slight hint of cheap bourbon. I tasted it and it was horrid - as bad as it smelled. So I called the store and told them what was going on. The person was rude and asked - what do you mean it doesn't smell right? I explained that it is my favorite and it should have a sour corn mash smell and this did not have that at all. He was short and said, "bring it back to swap out". Very different demeanor than when I was in front of this same person buying it - he was very polite when making the sale. I arrived at the store and placed it on the counter. He grabbed a bottle from across the register (instead of on the shelf where I got this bottle) and set it in front of me. I asked if I could open it to smell it before leaving to know it was OK. He said OK, but then added "BUT IF IT IS BAD, THEN I HAVE TO BUY TWO BOTTLES" (meaning HIM or HIS STORE). I held my tongue to be polite and removed the seal and cap. The smell was correct - it had the sour corn mash smell I have known. I told him this bottle was correct and he went back around the counter to the register. He then opened the first bottle and smelled it. He asked if he could smell the second bottle and he did, then said nothing. He turned and started to help another customer without another word to me. The rude service when there was a problem is enough to turn me away from a business. However, when I got back home and opened the second bottle, I noticed two things. The first was the color of the cap looked normal and the second one was that the texture of the cap was slightly stippled like normal. The first cap was smooth all over and was a different shade - too yellow. Therefore, my best conclusion/opinion was that this first bottle was a counterfeit bottle of whisky. It is possible that the distributor they buy from is selling counterfeit mixed with real to keep their costs down, the new owners are knowingly buying some counterfeit to keep their costs down or Quality Assurance at the distillery has an issue (which I doubt after buying over 100 bottles of this same whisky over the years without a single problem and knowing how the distilling process works). I say this not as an unskilled person, but as a seasoned Quality Engineer in manufacturing who is trained in color matching and plastic injection molding which would apply specifically to the cap concerns. I also have a "super sniffer" of a nose which has helped me be able to pick out subtle nuances in the smell and taste of whisky and bourbon. (The difference in taste could have been detected by anyone as bad as it was) Based on my above experience last week combining rude after sale service along with a counterfeit bottle - I will never purchase anything here again.
