Want to spend the night to keep exploring coal communities in Harlan County? The Benham School House Inn is the perfect place to stay. The Inn is located directly in front of the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum and just down the road from Cumberland Kentucky's main street. The personnel is quite friendly, and the atmosphere is extremely cozy. I slept in a double room, and it was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the Wi-Fi was wonderful. The only complaint was the breakfast. There are only coffee, juice, yogurt, and peanut butter bars available. I stayed during the week. It may change during the weekend, though. However, this allowed me to test out other local places. Otherwise, this is an excellent place to stay the night and recover before continuing to explore Kentucky.

We enjoyed the unique stay for the second time. Wished the restaurant etc was open but was still nice being there. The group enjoyed staying together and the fact we got to hang in the hall ways together and staff didn't complain was awesome. We'll be back.

Absolutely loved this restored schoolhouse, rich with history- school lockers still in place and atop a hill with a lovely view. The staff were super friendly and rooms were lovely and clean. We missed a black bear eating the pumpkins right outside the door (the receptionist told us about it) a great place to explore the area from.

This is my family's hometown and it warms my heart to see the school reopen into a hotel. Walking the halls my family walked was surreal. The hotel was spotless and very clean. My room was very comfortable and the bedding was outstanding! (Slept like a bear!) There has been great care in restoring the building. If you are looking for a VERY quiet getaway, this is a place you should explore.

No, it isn’t. There is a dog boarding and grooming business practically right in front of the Inn called Fiona’s.
The restaurant is open on Thursdays-Saturdays from 11am-8pm. The weekly Sunday Buffet is from 12pm-3pm.
