It was an amazing experience after Covid to actually be able to meet the available pets. The staff were amazing at guiding us to the room where the small animals were in and provided us with information on how there adoption process worked! It really shows how knowledgeable and caring the staff are! Prior to the day we picked up our Guinea pig (Picadilly) they provided clear instructions, and helped us bring Picadilly into the carrier in a calming way to not stress her during the ride back home. All in all I would recommend checking this animal shelter if you are looking for a pet! These animals are looking for loving, forever homes! And bonus here were some pictures of our Guinea pig Picadilly when we were able to visit her and her sister!

Deserves so much credit. I rescued a stray cat that ended up having a microchip, and they were able to contact the owner and do an intake for the animal in minutes. Very professional, compassionate, and cordial staff. Would highly recommend for rescue drop off.

Great shelter and staff! Thank you so much for helping us find our new fur baby! We love her so much!

We got a guinea pig. His name is Ned Flanders, like the Simpsons, his cage mate was Homer. As for the Animal Welfare League of Arlington itself, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and could tell they cared for all their animals and they were comfortable. Go here if you are looking to adopt.

Hi Diaz! Yes, we have rabbits for adoption and the adoption fee is $75 (they are all spayed/neutered and that is included in the fee): www.awla.org/adopt/adopt-a-small-companion-animal/
Hi Mirkianni! Here is the link to their website with information regarding adopting a dog: https://www.awla.org/adopt/adopt-a-dog/

Hello! We do not have any ferrets at the moment, we do get them somewhat often. You can keep an eye on our website at www.awla.org!
Hi Susan! If the tree is un-used, we are allowed to use it here at the shelter. Unfortunately, if it has been used, state regulations do not allow us to use it at the shelter. Thank you so much for thinking of us!
The best bet is to check the website. It is updated multiple times a day, so it is pretty accurate in terms of what animals are for adoption. That being said, small dogs are adopted fairly quickly after they are put on view. If you are looking for a small breed, visit the website, visit often, and go in person the moment you see the dog you want.
Hi Emma! We welcome visitors anytime during business hours!
If you have dogs to adopt !!! If you have Facebook or Instagram, they take videos and photos of the dogs they have.
You can walk in. No appointment needed
$200 for 1; $300 for two
Yes it is. They do everything to rehabilitate and/or place animals brought there.
Yes they microchip them. But you do have to register the chip. I think it’s 49 for a year or $99 for life
Hi Nancy! I'm so sorry that you are experiencing the loss of a loved one. We do offer support groups occasionally through our Smarty Pets classes. You can keep an eye on upcoming events at https://www.awla.org/events/. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria also has a Pet Loss Support Group that meets regularly.
I am not sure, but you can go to their website and see.
Hi Nicole! Unfortunately we are not aware of any low-cost vets that will neuter guinea pigs because it is such a delicate procedure. Our small animals go to Stahl Exotics for their procedures!
Hi Kathy. Please give us a call at 703-931-9241 and we’ll see what we can do to help!

Also, they do do a check to understand your motivation and the resources that you can provide the animal you will foster /adopt.

Hi Gwen! Are you an Arlington County resident? AWLA can take owner surrenders of pets from Arlington Co residents. You can find out more here: https://www.awla.org/services/surrendering-an-animal/
It's not listed online that I saw, but their address and phone are there... https://www.awla.org/
This is a wonderful organization. The place is well kept and animals are well cared for. We have donated carriers and other items as well as used their spay neuter program. You are in the right place to donate, adopt or volunteer.
Call Wildlife rehabilitation not Animal Control. Wildlife is managed by the state so Animal Control can only remove them from inside living spaces, capture potentially rabid or sick/injured, or contact wildlife rehab for you. If they are healthy and not in immediate danger the best thing would be to wait a few weeks and they will leave the nest on their own as they strike out into their own space. It would be very difficult to move them to a new location and expect them to know how to find food in an unknown area - it would be like moving you to a foriegn city and expecting you to survive without knowing the language or dangers of the area.
You can find their current dogs on the website and on pet finder. Go meet all of their dogs. You may find your new best friend, regardless of the color of their fur or ancestral country of origin.
Nice idea! I saw the donation box outside the building - they accept only new and unopened food and toys, etc. for animals, from what I remember.
Hi Freddy! Luckily, we do not get to capacity very often, but when we do, we run adoption specials to find more animals homes and put animals into foster homes as well. Here at AWLA we do not euthanize for space or time limits.
Changes every day - come on in and see!
Place an application, pay the fee, and keep them indoors.
Please, please take the cats to this shelter! You wont be charged and the people are kind and helpful.
Hi Keith! The AWLA is an open-admission shelter, which means we take in any animals that need help or can no longer be cared for by their owners in Arlington Co. Because of this open door policy, we do on rare occasions have to humanely euthanize animals for severe medical or behavioral issues. However, we are proud to say that this year 96% of animals brought to us were either adopted, returned to their owners, or transferred to other organizations! Please let us know if you have any other questions! ~ Chelsea, AWLA Communications Specialist
No
The AWLA animal's are up for adoption they are not for "sale". As stated earlier there's an application to adopt process and an adoption fee if you are approved for the adoption. See their website for animals available for adoption.
They do
Yes they do. I believe the fee is between $100 and $200. Go to the website for the correct answer.
Yes definitely and they have the only bottle feeding volunteer group called the Kitten College in the nation!
Their website is great. They told us they mostly spay/neuter on Monday and they will be on the website by Wednesday and its updated often.
Yes they do! Unless people adopted all of them and they have no more.
They di not offer service dogs per se. It is more they offer dogs that have been rescued for adoption.
If you want a white kitten, then I would suggest checking in daily on the Adopt a Cat section!
You sure can! Those, and beds, blankets, and unopened pet foods.
