Google maps are the 3 results just below the paid ads on the top 1/3 of the screen on Google search. They include a map with a red pushpin indicating where the business is. They also include the reviews (and most recent review) for the business in the listing. There is no cost to appear in Google maps (unless you choose to run a paid ad for that purpose). The search results beneath the maps listings are what are generally called the organic search results and they list the website URL and a snippet of content (usually the description form that page). These listings are also free to appear in, however many need the assistance of a local SEO agency who has years of experience helping to optimize the website (or map listing) on the first page of Google.
The idea behind proper search engine marketing is being consistestent. Google doesn't want to see a local business start and stop link and/or content creation often because if they do, it sends a signal to Google that the business may be closed, not wanting new clients, or just doesn't care anymore. Should you choose to do SEO, put a plan in place to keep at it over time otherwise your competitors may get a leg. up on you and see that you backed off (not to mention Google will see that to which could be very problematic when it comes to your online visibility).
