One of the most common myths about chiropractic care is that it’s “addictive” or needs to be very frequently. Many people feel so much better after getting an adjustment that they do decide to continue returning for maintenance care. Occasional maintenance visits with a chiropractor are similar to regular wellness exams with a family medicine doctor. Usually, patients have more frequent appointments initially, as they recover. Once you’re healed and rehabbed, you may decide to continue with maintenance care if you wish. For patients with serious issues, there may be a recommendation of more frequent visits for a short time until the issue is fully resolved.
Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-invasive form of medicine that helps with neuromusculoskeletal conditions. No health treatment is completely free of potential side effects and the risks with chiropractic care are very small. Many patients feel some type of relief following chiropractic care but might also experience mild soreness, stiffness, and achiness just as they do after performing an exercise. When the joints in your body are misaligned, the surrounding musculature will conform to this new position, so once the joints are realigned and spinal health is restored, the muscles around the area might want to stiffen up due to them getting back into the normalized position again. The stiffness generally subsides within the first few days after getting an adjustment. Communicating with your doctor and giving a thorough health history can help reduce the risks of any serious side effects as your chiropractor will now know what to be careful of.
Under normal circumstances, adjustments don’t hurt at all. The patient occasionally may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment, but this lasts only seconds until the chiropractic adjustment is completed.
The benefits of proper joint alignment are numerous. Adjustments restore the transfer of nerve impulses, which allows the patient’s body to function as it should. Every individual has a unique experience after our chiropractor performs an adjustment. You will likely feel near-immediate relief from your pain. You may notice that your muscle tension subsides. Some people report better sleep, a stress reduction, and an overall feeling of health and vitality.
Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that is a combination of refined skills developed in chiropractic school. A chiropractor may use their hands, or even an instrument, to manipulate joints of the body to help restore motion and joint function. Benefits of spinal manipulation include decreasing pain, decreasing inflammation, and helping to restore motion and mobility within the joints. A chiropractic adjustment generally does not cause discomfort and is controlled to meet the specific needs of each patient.
Chiropractic care naturally complements other conservative care techniques such as corrective exercises, orthotics, and physical therapy. For instance, if you have a spinal misalignment related to an injury or congenital abnormality, our chiropractor may prescribe a combination of spinal adjustments, corrective exercises to strengthen or rehabilitate your back, physical therapy to strengthen muscles, and/or orthotics to correct foot imbalances that are contributing to back pain, neck pain, or any other conditions causing you pain and discomfort.
Chiropractors can care for infants and older. There are numerous conditions that children can benefit from chiropractic care, such as chronic ear infections, bedwetting, sleep disturbances, latching problems, and behavior problems. Since chiropractic helps with communication between the brain and body, this can help with a child’s development.
Chiropractors can’t treat every medical condition, of course, but you might be surprised at the diverse range of medical problems that do respond well to chiropractic care. They include: Fibromyalgia Back Pain Neck Pain Headaches Sciatica
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that good health depends upon a normally functioning nervous system. “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word “chiropraktikos”, meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting the musculoskeletal area of the body, to see which areas are functioning improperly.
