I have returned to Eyeworks of San Mateo for a second year to have my annual eye examination and get updated prescription for my glasses. The optometry is conveniently located in downtown San Mateo. The office is clean and pleasant. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dr. Gary Lai is very personable, patient, and knowledgeable. Prior to visiting Dr. Lai, I had suffered from the glasses made under a poorly written prescription from a prior optometrist. The new glasses made under Dr. Lai's prescription have been great and enable me to see the computer screen clearly and effortlessly. I feel very lucky to have found Eyeworks of San Mateo, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good optometry to fulfill his/her prescription glass needs.

Expensive glasses and withhold info to prevent buying elsewhere Made an appt. for an eye exam and glasses prescription. Told them upfront I'm on a fixed income w/no vision insurance, so I might not be able to purchase glasses from them. Was told "no problem". When given my prescription, they did not supply a PD (Pupillary Distance) Brittani, the assistant, said they routinely deny giving people their PD. Really??? This is required for ordering glasses online. So I paid $220 for eye exam and imaging, and they won't do a 3 min procedure so I have all the info! Sent polite follow-up requesting an exception...no response for 2 days. Tired of Waiting: Went to Costco - For $150 got lenses only for 2 pairs old glasses! Requested distance PD from Costco, then ordered stylish frames for distance from Warby Parker for $145. Total $300! Eyeworks quote: one pair of glasses w/frames over $500!

I've been doing my eye exams and buying glasses here for the last 15+ years and Dr. Lai is fantastic. He's friendly, very thorough, doesn't rush the exam, and explains everything. The best place in the area, I won't go anywhere else. My only criticism is that the glasses take awhile to be ready. Usually a month, or a little longer. BUT I've tried having glasses made elsewhere, for less money and faster, and they gave me a headache! Money wasted and lesson learned. Now, I always get my glasses at Eyeworks, I can see super clearly and no headache. Highly highly recommend this place and Dr. Lai.

I have been going to Eyeworks for the past 10 years and the team is great. Dr. Gary is professional and personable and always seems upbeat and positive. The staff is super helpful when picking out frames and in making the best choices about lenses, they always take great care on me.
