Dr. Becker was amazing. Made me feel so comfortable during our session. I was incapable of walking without feeling pain and met with other Chiropractors which none were able to help. One session with Dr. Becker and it was like a miracle, I was able to walk with little to no pain right in the office.

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. Dr. Becker always uses his hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function primarily for patients with sciatica, lower back pain, neck pain and headaches and tailbone pain. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. Dr. Becker always adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others. Chiropractic care is also available to active-duty members of the armed forces at more than 60 military bases and is available to veterans at more than 60 major veterans’ medical facilities. With that said, Dr. Becker does not rely solely on payment from any insurer and asks that his patients all pay for their care at the time of service. Dr. Becker gladly bills the insurance plan for you and any reimbursement is due to the patient.

Are chiropractors allowed to practice in hospitals or use medical outpatient facilities?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Chiropractors are being recognized to admit and treat patients in hospitals and to use outpatient clinical facilities (such as labs, x-rays, etc.) for their non-hospitalized patients. Hospital privileges were first granted in 1983 and Dr. Becker was chosen as the second chiropractor to ever have privileges at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Becker continues to be a member of the medical network and frequently treats doctors and nurses under their care plan.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including lower back pain and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

A referral is not needed to see a chiropractor in Los Angeles; however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements. You may want to contact your employer’s human resources department—or the insurance plan directly—to find out if there are any referral requirements. Most plans allow you to just call and schedule an appointment with your chiropractor.

What conditions do chiropractors treat? And how do I pick the best chiropractor in Los Angeles?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Chiropractors care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. Dr. Becker is especially well known for his expertise in caring for patients with sciatica, lower back pain, neck pain and headaches and tailbone pain - particularly with his highly skilled chiropractic adjustments. Dr. Becker also cares for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful myofascial conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can then cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. Dr. Becker also counsels patients on exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modifications.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractors have an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary. Dr. Becker can tell you the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last given your response to your initial treatment. Any chiropractor who advises a lengthy course of treatment before knowing your response to chiropractic care is simply guessing and more likely – selling a package of care that you may or may not need.

Are Chiropractors considered essential services in Los Angeles?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Chiropractic care is considered to be an essential service as it represents a primary approach for the prevention, diagnosis and conservative management of back pain and spinal disorders that can often enable patients to reduce or avoid the need for riskier treatments, such as prescription opioid pain medications and surgery. Notably, in 2017, the American College of Physicians released an update to its low back pain treatment guidelines that recommends first using non-drug treatments, such as spinal manipulation (a centerpiece of chiropractic care), for acute and chronic low back pain. At the same time, the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2017 supports the use of spinal manipulative therapy as a first-line treatment for acute low back pain.

How effective is chiropractic care?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

• 3 in every 4 people who saw a chiropractor in the last year (77%) described their chiropractic care as “very effective." • In a consumer survey, chiropractic outperformed all other back pain treatments, including prescription medication, deep-tissue massage, yoga, pilates, and over-the-counter medication therapies. • Chiropractors are the highest-rated healthcare practitioner for low-back pain treatments above physical therapists (PTs), specialist physician/MD (i.e., neurosurgeons, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons), and primary care physician/MD (i.e., family or internal medicine). • A clinical comparative trial conducted at three military medical centers found that chiropractic care combined with usual medical care for low back pain provides greater pain relief and a greater reduction in disability than medical care alone.

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 3, 2020

Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

Dr. Becker, how is your sciatica treatment different or better than everyone else's?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

I have extensive experience treating patients with sciatica. While I can't give away all of my secrets and protocols, I do use a mixture of modalities ranging from manual manipulations to spinal flexion therapy and target the sciatic pain and the misalignments and other structural issues behind the discomfort. The result? Patients throughout the greater Los Angeles area can finally break free from back pain and enjoy more active lifestyles. If you are suffering from sciatica, call our office at (310) 277-8822 and book your first appointment.

Why are low back pain and sciatica so common?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Sciatica is the name given to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, but anything that irritates that nerve can cause pain. Sciatica is usually caused by a compressed nerve in the lower spine. Frequently, "sciatica" is confused with more generalized back pain, but that is incorrect as sciatica is not just limited to the lower back. You may have also seen me note that Sciatica is not a condition, but rather a symptom of another problem involving the sciatic nerve. Some experts estimate that up to 40 percent of people will experience sciatica at least once in their life but up to 90% of Americans will suffer the more generalized lower back pain.

I have neck pain and I'm freaking out about getting my neck adjusted. What can I do?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

A neck adjustment (also known as cervical manipulation) is a precise procedure applied to the joints of the neck, usually by hand. It should always be performed with your permission and to your tolerance. A neck adjustment works to improve the mobility of the spine and to restore range of motion; it can also increase movement of the adjoining muscles. Patients typically notice an improved ability to turn and tilt the head, and a reduction of pain, soreness, and stiffness. Of course, Dr. Becker will develop a program of care that may combine more than one type of treatment, depending on your personal needs. In addition to manipulation, the treatment plan may include mobilization, massage or rehabilitative exercises, or something else. One of the most recent reviews of scientific literature found evidence that patients with chronic neck pain enrolled in clinical trials reported significant improvement following chiropractic spinal manipulation. What's the difference between tailbone pain and pelvic floor pain?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Pelvic floor pain is rather vague. It has no hint or suggestion as to what is causing the pain or dysfunction in that region. Men and women also have different issues given their different organs. Mostly, I would want to know the history of the complaint. When and how it started. It's progression over time, severity, pain or sensations radiating to other areas.

What is the difference between Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatica?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Piriformis syndrome refers only to when your piriformis muscle irritates your sciatic nerve. Additionally, your piriformis muscle is not located in your lumbar spine, but in your buttock. Therefore, strictly speaking, piriformis syndrome is not the same thing as sciatica (lumbar radiculopathy), but causes similar pain down your sciatic nerve. At this point, you may be wondering "Why should I care about what term is used?" The answer to this question is that your treatment plan typically needs to address the underlying cause (think location) of whatever is irritating or compressing your sciatic nerve (or nerve roots). So then, your treatment plan for your piriformis syndrome may differ significantly from a treatment plan for someone suffering from sciatica from a lumbar spine problem (like a lumbar herniated disc). Please call our office to schedule a consultation today.

Can Chiropractic care help with a herniated disc or disc bulge?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Disks act as cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. Over time, disks dehydrate and their cartilage stiffens. These changes can cause the outer layer of the disk to “bulge” out fairly evenly all the way around its circumference. A herniated disk, on the other hand, results when a crack in the tough outer layer of cartilage allows some of the softer inner cartilage to protrude out of the disk. Herniated disks are also called ruptured disks or slipped disks, although the whole disk does not rupture or slip. Compared with a bulging disk, a herniated disk is more likely to cause pain because it generally protrudes farther and is more likely to irritate nerve roots. The irritation can be from compression of the nerve nerve or, much more commonly, the herniation causes a painful inflammation of the nerve root. Chiropractic care can absolutely help to restore motion, pain and inflammation and keep you functioning without unnecessary surgery or surgical procedures

I’ve been told by my M.D. that I have spinal stenosis and that I need injections and possibly surgery. Isn’t there something more conservative? Can chiropractic help?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of spinal canal by degeneration and age-related changes and it is one of the more common causes of lower back pain. As you age, you increase the chances of developing osteoarthritis, disc degeneration and thickening of ligaments which all might add to the narrowing of spinal stenosis. The symptoms can include sciatica, back pain or weakness in the legs or "foot drop”. Spinal stenosis may be treated with conservative treatment approaches including chiropractic care. Dr. Becker would need to perform a full physical evaluation and look at your MRI findings prior to discussing a possible course of chiropractic care. At all times, surgery should be a last resort or for any patient with progressing muscle weakness. Dr. Becker is a Chiropractor in West Los Angeles (West LA) and specializes in treating back pain, sciatica and slipped disc injuries. He also treats patients with spinal stenosis, herniated disc, bulging discs, piriformis syndrome and tailbone pain

Hello, I just had a car accident a few days ago and have neck pain. What would you suggest I do first?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Car accidents frequently cause whiplash. The “whipping” refers to the sudden and forceful hyperextension of your head and neck backwards, followed by the return hyperflexion forward or vice versa. As such, whiplash injuries are also known as hyperflexion/hyperextension injuries or a type of sprain/strain injury of the neck. Generally, this results in a “soft-tissue” injury, usually limited to muscles and tendons being strained and ligaments being sprained as a result of an automobile accident. It can also be due to sports injuries or an accidental fall. Patients may also experience muscle spasms, stiff neck, headaches, dizziness, jaw pain, ringing sensation in the ears and swelling and tenderness in the neck. If you had a car accident in Los Angeles and need help, please contact our office sooner rather than later. Dr. Becker has 30 years of experience treating car accident patients with whiplash in West LA.

I was told that I have cervical degenerative disc disease but don’t understand what I can do for it?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2019

Your neck or cervical spine is the upper portion of your spine that includes the first 7 vertebrae. Intervertebral discs sit between each vertebra and are similar to shock absorbing pads. The natural curve of your neck also helps absorb shock. However, over time, these natural shock absorbing discs may wear unevenly due to aging, trauma or injury. As a result, the intervertebral discs may dry out and the space between the vertebrae can narrow. If this happens, the nerve roots exiting between the vertebrae can be compressed resulting in neck and arm pain and weakness. This is also known as cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD). Dr. Becker has been voted the best chiropractor in Los Angeles by both his peers and patients and is an expert at treating cervical degenerative disc disease without the use of medications or surgery. Dr. Becker practices in the center of West Los Angeles, one block south of Beverly Hills and just east of Century City.

Why is my sciatica worse in the morning?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018

The reason why sciatica can be more painful in the morning is because once the sciatic nerve is being irritated, inflammation has already begun in the area. Overnight, as your mobility has decreased while you are sleeping, this inflammation in the area can increase. In the morning when you wake up, you may have more pain, but once you start moving around, it increases the mobility in the joints and that inflammation ca start being dispersed and your pain can decrease. I hope this helps.

Do steroid injections help sciatica?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018

Anytime you put something into the body to help alleviate any pain, like a steroid injection, the main point of that steroid injection is the numbing agent. It also helps to reduce inflammation and numb the pain that the patient has. So, to answer your question, yes. But that would be temporarily. The problem is, by taking a pill or an injection you are not getting to the root cause of that pain, which is either a disc problem, a misalignment in the vertebra, or something else that is pinching that nerve. To put a shot in there to alleviate any pain is great, but you still have to address the root cause of the problem, or eventually, that pain is going to return.

I’m feeling lower back pain, with pain traveling down into my left leg. It feels sharp and also numb with tingling in my legs and feet. Are these what people call sciatic nerve pain?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018

The problem you describe is common in people with disc herniations in the lower back when an injured disc is pressing on the sciatic nerve. There may be an increasing pain when lifting heavy objects, bending forward, or when sneezing and coughing. The mistake that most people make is in taking medications. It only numbs the sensation of pain, but do nothing to correct the disc injury or problem. We help people to treat herniated disc injuries and sciatica naturally.

I have sciatic pain. What do I need to know about you and your treatment?

Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker Chiropractor | Sep 4, 2018

Sciatic problems can start from your spine as you age or from long periods of sitting or bad posture, or from prior injuries that you don’t even remember. It is important start with the understanding that sciatica is only a symptom of another problem in your body. It is not a diagnosis or understanding of the cause of sciatic pain. In fact, sciatic pain and associated sharp pains, or numbness or tingling down the way down into the bottom back of the thigh but, can be due to a number of different things happening in your body. Most people rightfully associate it with having a problem or pinched nerve in your lower back, causing altered sensation further down the nerve. You could also have a problem with the vertebrae in your back or the intervertebral discs between them, that might also cause pressure or irritation on the nerve or several nerves that go to make up the larger sciatic nerve. Dr. Steven Becker has been treating sciatica in West Los Angeles for nearly 30 years.

What else am I missing? Anything to add?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2018

In addition to being a safe form of treatment, chiropractic manipulation is incredibly effective for patients with sciatica, back pain, neck pain, headaches, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, slipped discs, tailbone pain or coccyx pain, piriformis syndrome etc., getting patients back on their feet faster than traditional medical care. A recent study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic care is more effective than medical care at treating chronic lower back pain in patients who have experienced symptoms for one year or less. Similarly, a study published in Spine found that manual manipulation provides better relief of chronic spinal pain than medications. This is also highlighted by a 2012 Spine study that found that only 1.5 percent of workers with back injuries whose first point of treatment was with a chiropractor required surgery, compared to the 42.7 percent of workers whose first contact was with a surgeon.

Why do you adjust the neck?

Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2018
Dr. Steven Becker | Sep 4, 2018

Neck pain in Los Angeles and some types of headaches are treated through specific cervical adjustments. Cervical manipulation works to improve joint mobility in the neck, improving range of motion and reducing muscle spasm, which in turn helps relieve pressure and tension. Neck manipulation in West LA or Beverly Hills, when performed by a skilled and well-educated chiropractor such as Dr. Becker, can be a remarkably safe procedure. While some reports have associated high-velocity upper neck manipulation with a certain rare kind of stroke or vertebral artery dissection, this can also take place spontaneously in patients who have pre-existing arterial disease. The best evidence indicates that the incidence of artery injuries associated with high-velocity upper neck manipulation is extremely rare and similar to the incidence of this type of stroke among the general population.
