I have had several occasions that without the care and attention and expertise of the doctors and nurses I wouldn't be here writing this review right now. They took care of my father when he was dying and help my mom who's 96 to heal. Every doctor I have dealt with has been good to exemplary, same goes with the staff and the nurses. I guess I want to tell them thank you.

No one had the time to care for me during my emergency room visit. I had to transfer from Santa Ynez. In Santa Barabara, I then had to wait 1.5 hours before the primary doctor even came in, despite Santa Ynez telling me that Santa Barbara knew I was coming. It was another 1.5 hours before the specialist Gynecologist would see me. So, it was 3 hours before anyone told me that my diagnosis was NOT life-threatening. The Gynecologist acted as if my presence was taking too much time away from the treatment of more severe patients. I did not feel comfortable having her perform surgery on me when she already did not sound confident in doing the proceedure. (Instead, I am waiting longer to get my proceedure done with a different doctor in a different hospital.) I will never feel comfortable visiting Cottage emergency rooms after this. They don't have time to address your needs here.

Having read enough reviews on both the Cottage website and its ER, there seems to be a consistent strain here: either 5 stars or 1, a huge discrepancy. For a well-endowed hospital (I imagine those who are heavy donors are guaranteeing special treatment for the future if the need arises), this health system needs:1) better customer service training, as it is now a transactional, business-driven model (the first thing they ask is your insurance provider's name) still basking in the aura of public service...the hospital operators are still the same rude ones;2) better sensitivity training (I have twice been threatened by either nurses or a social worker during a rehab stay and an ER visit and threats are both inappropriate and unproductive in order to encourage compliance or relieve anxiety...try communication, what a novel idea;3) a revolutionary attitude shift among the direct providers, i.e., doctors and nurses and this can only come from the top admin level where arrogance and smugness originate or are overlooked. With 2 billion $ plus in patient billings this year or last, Cottage is expanding to eat up smaller facilities up and down the coast and are opening urgent cares...they should work on the systemically troubling problems with care provision rather than getting bigger, looking better and renovating or replacing their existing technology. Bigger isn't better, nor is more money an index of wealth. Your reputation is your wealth. But they won't listen...why bother? Harry and Meghan had a baby there!

I was on a cruise when I developed a medical emergency. The ship stopped in Santa Barbara where I was transferred to the Cottage Hospital. The physicians and staff provided me with exceptional care. The hospital was very clean. I would highly recommend this hospital.

We have been waiting at Goleta emergency room for almost 3 hours ( my husband has an ear infection) Could we get in to see a doctor sooner if we came there now?

Judi Higgs | Sep 4, 2018
Catherine | Sep 4, 2018

Urgent Care or a similar place might be your best bet in a situation like this, unless your husband has a medical issue making an ear infection non-routine. Goleta Valley ER generally has a shorter waiting time than SBCH ER. If it's after hours for a med center or Urgent Care, you've made a good choice. ERs have to triage their patients, taking the most serious cases first. Unfortunately, painful though it is, an ear infection is routine. Patients who come in after your husband may be seen before him because their conditions are considered more serious. Hope he was finally seen and feeling better now.

Marie Caballero | Sep 4, 2018

Yes. They are required to see you. The hospital system maintains an Indigent fund out of which they may cover the costs of your visit.

If I came to the ER now how long would the wait to see a Dr.

John Strange Johnsartto | Sep 4, 2018
Catherine | Sep 4, 2018

The ER will triage you to determine how serious your condition is initially. When you will be seen depends on the number of patients already in ER, results of triage, and number of people waiting to be seen.
