Nice little interpretive walk. We were there on a cold, rainy day and would have loved to stay longer. What we did see was impressive.

This was one of, if not the most, exciting and immersive interpretative Oregon Trail parks/locations I’ve visited between eastern Oregon and all of Idaho. Ruts are the most distinct and easy to locate out of all the locations I’ve visited. The oil painting pictures are incredible and really allow you to put yourself in the leather boots of the Americans before us. I showed up the first time 30 minutes before the park closed (closes at 7pm) and I immediately lost track of time. At 6:55pm, five minutes before close, the park employee at the entrance honked their horn three times letting me know it was time to leave. I literally ran out along the paths and apologized to her for staying late. This is not my first time accidentally staying later than I’m supposed to be in a state park, so I was expecting to be chewed out (and rightfully so) like I have other times at different parks. Instead, she was friendly and understanding saying “I figured you would lose track of time when I saw you pull up so late” chuckling. She then kindly informed me of when they would open the next day and followed me out. I only got to view half of the area, but it was so incredible I knew I had to stay nearby until they opened tomorrow. I camped just west of here at Emigrant Springs and was the first one here at the park when it opened the next morning. I even beat the employee. It started dumping rain the night before and didn’t let up all day, but I was so excited to be back I forgot to put my boots on and ran back into the park with my sneakers. Some parts of the walking trail were covered with 2”-3” deep water, but this place was so incredible it wasn’t even worth going back to the RV to change. I dredged through the wet trail completely soaking my shoes, socks, and jeans… and it was worth it even considering I was soaking wet and being eaten alive by mosquitoes. I WILL be back to visit here again. This is one of the few MUST STOP places along the trail.

Larry the camp host was so friendly and helpful. Super easy hike. Paths are paved or easy dirt. Loop looks longer in map than it is. Awesome quick, easy stop to see original wagon tracks. $5 entrance fee so bring cash. Just about 4 miles off I-84. Can exit and be back on 84 within an easy hour.
