After my mom broke her hip, we needed more help at home. A Better Living found a great caregiver that was a great match for my mom. Our caregiver prepared food, assisted her with her PT, and kept her company. She became a part of our family and we were so lucky to have her. Thank you A Better Living for finding us a great caregiver.

Questions & Answers

What Is a Live-In Caregiver vs 24 hour care?

Sometimes they need assistance at night or just feel safer knowing someone is there ready to help in an emergency. Live In care is just like it sounds. A caregiver is provided a private room and board by the client, and lives in the home with the client on the days they work. They sleep at night, and are available to help as needed. Generally, a Live-In caregiver should be able to get at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and works 8 hours intermittently throughout the day, taking breaks as they require. Recent California and federal legislation have virtually eliminated the “Live-In” caregiver category. However, a single caregiver may provide up to 24 hours of care coverage by working a 24 hour, or even a 16 hour shift in some cases. Usually, agencies provide two caregivers working alternating 12 hour shifts, or three caregivers to work in 8 hour shifts.

Absolutely. We will meet with you and your family in your home or at a hospital/skilled nursing facility to discuss and identify your needs and requirements. This meeting helps us identify the skills required and characteristics that you would highly value in a caregiver. This information enables us to provide you with a caregiver that is highly compatible with you and your family. Occasionally, individuals needing care, or their family members, have learned of our reputation and need to arrange for services over the phone without the free consultation. In those cases, we are happy to gather the information over the telephone and base our provider choice on the information gathered by our knowledgeable care coordinators. Either way, compatibility is guaranteed!

Hi William, we provide caregivers to seniors and disabled adults who need caring assistance so they can continue living in their own homes. Caregivers provide assistance with personal care, companionship, safety monitoring, bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, ambulation and/or walker wheelchair assistance, meals, light housekeeping, running errands/ shopping, and transportation to appointments and social engagements. Our goal is to help our seniors that want to live independently in their own homes. Sometimes we meet prospective clients who have decided a facility might be a better fit for their situation, and in those cases we can help them with their decision.

Hi Jontae, Thank you for your question. the California Department of Social Services maintains the Home Care Aide Registry for persons seeking to work as home care aides. To be approved by the State as a Home Care Aide, CDSS requires all applicants to obtain a criminal background clearance administered by the department. To pass, the individual can have no convictions other than minor traffic violations. CDSS does have a process for requesting an exemption from some penal code convictions, however many cannot be exempted. If an individual was convicted of an exemptable penal code, they can follow the CDSS process to show they have been rehabilitated, and CDSS will decide their fitness to become a registered home care aide. For more information contact the CDSS Home Care Aide Registry.
