During this initial stage of recovery, medications are administered in a controlled setting to soothe physical withdrawal symptoms and prevent any serious, life-threatening withdrawal effects. Life-threatening withdrawal symptoms can occur in individuals who are detoxing from benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan) and alcohol as both of these substances can result in withdrawal seizures when either is eliminated from the body.
