While the Muir woods are nice, the shuttle service is slow and unpleasant.

It's nice that there's a shuttle that runs on weekends, but don't expect them to hew too closely to the schedule. If you see a bus loading, go run and catch it, because there's no guarantee when the next bus will be. We had booked a shuttle for the 2:05pm departure. We got there at 1:50pm, parked and were getting our things sorted out of our car. At around 1:55 the bus left the lot. We ended up waiting around until 2:30 until the next shuttle left. Also, the spiel they give you before loading the bus is a little misleading. The guy told us it was going to take 35 minutes for the bus to get there (this turned out to be accurate), and that it would take the same amount of time if you drove yourself. This is not quite right, because the route the bus takes goes down Highway 1 almost all the way down to Muir Beach before turning up Frank Valley Road. If you're driving yourself you will probably turn up Panoramic before turning down Muir Woods Road, which would save you about 10-15min. Again, I appreciate having a shuttle and am all for mass transit. But I would appreciate having both accurate departure times and accurate spiels. That is all.

This parking is very convenient and easy to spot. There are plenty of parking spots available and the Muir woods shuttles run often enough. They also have a truck there that provides all the information. There is a park and ride across the street. We first ended up there and realized a lot of other people did too.

This is just under the freeway from the official Muir Woods shuttle location, which is at the "Glass Door" parking area. Also, the Route 66 Marin County Metrolink goes to Muir Woods during high visitation periods. The view from behind the Glass Door buildings is stunning early in the morning.
