I was excited to join the San Mateo credit union upon first hearing about it, as I had heard nothing but positive things. My VERY FIRST experience with them was negative and made me feel as if I was being discriminated against (I’m a POC). She asked me my address and I gave her my ID (with my current address), she did whatever she was doing behind the CPU and I could tell that she was getting suspicious by her body language smh, so I asked her if there was a problem. She gave a VERY fake smile and response and continued doing what she was doing. She then asked me about another address (I have another apartment in my name for PERSONAL/PRIVATE reasons) and I told her about it upfront. Long story short, I had ALL of the credentials you need to open an account at this bank and I felt that the people who were working at the time I was there were EXTREMELY prejudiced. People MUST remember that 90% of communication is NON-VERBAL, and people can feel hostility/prejudice (SOME MORE than OTHERS) so please keep in mind that you want to be treated with respect and dignity, so you should ABSOLUTELY treat people the way you wish to be treated. It saddens me more that the majority of the times I have experienced prejudice (since moving to the Bay Area from ATLANTA in 2018), it has been at the hands of someone who I would expect to EMPATHIZE with me NOT perpetuate the very HATE that they are attempting to avoid themselves. I hope this message helps someone, even if it’s to let them know that they aren’t the only ones who have felt slighted by this institution and the people they choose to hire. Sincerely,

I want to thank Hanz Lavagnino for his EXCELLENT customer service. I came into the branch selling a car in which I had a loan with San Mateo Credit Union. California State makes it difficult for such a transaction. Knowing the difficulty (especially during Covid), he called his resources at headquarters and came up with a solution that solved the transaction within 15 minutes. Customer Success is the heart of any organization, and Hanz exemplifies this belief.

Absolutely horrible bank. Customer service is offensively bad. Good luck trying to do anything with the loan department as workers will be slow to reply to you and even slower to process paperwork/requests. And even then, they will not due their due diligence and will give you outright wrong information. Avoid having to work with Melissa Tolentino, a loan agent, at all costs. Her manager, David, is equally unhelpful as he is more interested in making excuses for incompetency than actually proposing solutions. Worst customer service I’ve ever had from any type of business. Do yourself a favor and take your money elsewhere.
