I stayed for a week in the recently renovated NGIS and enjoyed the cleanliness and convenient location on base. The staff are friendly but be prepared for a lengthy check-in wait if there are more than three people ahead of you. I forgot some items in my room and the friendly staff contacted me and arranged for them to be returned via mail. Outstanding location of you are visiting the Newport Navy base. Small refrigerator and microwave in each room!

Stayed at one of the NGIS building, not the main one. Had a room with separate living room and bedroom. Very clean and wifi was good. Pillows and linen very comfortable. Ways to improve is to take off the screws that prevent you from fully closing curtains. There is a sunshade but light still gets in and is annoying if you like a dark room to sleep in. Another annoyance was the smoke detectors. They have a bright flashing green light that interrupts getting to sleep. That light just let's you know it's working. Suggest another model or a cover. Great bathroom area but shower curtains had magnets on them but nothing to cling too. So water would splash out and curtain would such into shower area.

Numerous buildings, each with different pros and cons. In building 442 the walls are so thin that you can hear your neighbors personal phone calls word for word. Or if you're lucky, you'll have a foreign national from some third world country stay next to you, play tv insanely loud, get drunk, and sing gospel music until six am. Don't worry though because staff are very sympathetic and will feign concern before dismissing you. Do yourself a favor and 'book' a room last minute and get a CNA. You'll get more per diem and live in a better place. Edit: Gave a star back because the cleaning ladies are really nice and SOME of the other staff. FYI you still only get partial per diem so you're better off staying off base.
