There are many methods for degassing pipes and tanks, the "best" method will depend on the situation but some commonly used methods include EMTOS (Envent Mobile Thermal Oxidizer System), thermal combustion units, internal combustion engine, scrubber units, chemical degassing and refrigeration and condensing. We go over more of these methods on our website.
Combustion remains one of the most effective methods of degassing tanks, but there are several methods to choose from. For tanks or pipes that have not yet been degassed before, it's important to fully inspect the logistics and the scope of the project before one method is chosen.
Ensuring that the company meets all discharge permit requirements for general water quality, volume and flow rate is extremely important. A proper degassing job will likely require mobile pipeline and tank hydro-testing equipment. Each state will have unique guidelines that vendors need to follow.
Degassing specialists are able to provide clients with a reporting program with detailed reports showing full compliance. General contractors may not be able to provide this service. A comprehensive degassing log will typically include PID/FID calibration records, continuous temperature monitoring, verified flow measuring system, source testing reports, residence time certification, and correct stack monitoring.
There are state and federal regulations to address the health and safety of residents. Tank degassing controls toxic and harmful air contaminants, it also reduces the emission of air pollutants. This helps eliminate the risk of explosion during tank cleaning or tank repair.
In order to degas tanks in California, a vendor needs to be permitted with the APCD/AQMD and complete an annual source test.
Degassing is a process of removing hydrocarbon toxic, explosive, noxious and odorous vapor from a tank, vessel, or pipeline under vacuum or pressure. Degassing also controls the vapor through chemical reactions. Toxic vapors need to be monitored and controlled to ensure compliance, and safety.
