This one of the most fascinating places on the planet. You can find prickly pear cactus and many other unique species found only on this sandy terrace of the Lower Wisconsin River. The cacti usually bloom in June so that's a good time to visit this spot. The Nature Conservancy manages this property and does burn here on a regular basis to keep woody plants from taking over. Stick to the trails to help keep erosion at bay. There is a 2 mile linear trail that takes you up the bluff through some woods, though they discourage people from visiting the overlook. It's hard not to walk out to the overlook even though the signs say to not go there.

One of the very few places in WI where you can find prickly pear cactus growing wild and the tortoises that feed on them. The views at the top are awesome, encompassing a large swath of the Wisconsin river valley. Keep your eyes open as you hike the trail, as there are snakes, tiger beetles, really fast wolf spiders, and some flora and fauna found no where else in WI. The trail to the top is about 1.7 miles and takes you through a couple different ecological zones. Great hiking trail only 40 minutes from Madison!

A 3 1/2 mi out and back trail that is sponsored by The Nature Conservancy and full of possibly more bird sounds at one time than I've ever heard! Stesp toward the end but a legit view and the prarie is pristine. The last quarter of the hike is a bit shaded in a more woody area which is nice.

Awesome short hike with lots of diversity! This place is nicknamed Wisconsin's Desert for a reason. I highly recommend it. It's beautiful every season of the year! Be sure to check it out at sunrise/sunset. The prairie or woodlands up top are both neat.

Prickly pear cactus normally bloom in late spring to early summer.
Google will sometimes take you to the wrong side of the hill - the lot can be seen from the highway and is not in farm fields
The trail to the top of the bluff starts out easy, but becomes a bit steeper and more difficult as the trail goes on. However it should be manageable for most active people. It's easier than the bluff trails at Devil's Lake if you're familiar with those.
