The welcome center was BEAUTIFUL. The staff was very friendly and very informative. The gift shop had a large selection of souvenirs for all ages. They had an exhibit to walk through. Free water bottle filling stations. Free maps public restrooms at the top of the mountain.

We drove up to the upper parking lot. The parking lot is one way so pay attention to the arrows. From the parking lot you can reach a number of overlooks after a short walk. You can see a beautiful piedmont view that goes on as far as the eye can see. You can view Pilot Mountain up close. There is a bathroom on one side of the parking lot. Across the side with the bathroom there is a tree line and you can see distant mountains. The sun sets behind these mountains. Along the sidewalk on the same side as the bathroom are a few benches and these are the perfect spot to watch the sunset. There is a trail head with a mile round trip trail to reach the top rock formation of pilot mountain. You can walk around the base of the rock knob on top.

My wife and I are from Michigan and really didn't know what to expect upon arriving but we were very impressed! The campsites are beautiful and well spaced apart. You are never too far from a water spigot or the bathrooms. The bathrooms have a few urinals, 5 stalls and 5 showers. There is no electricity on the campground area sites. All sorts of different trails around here with some really great hikes that offer some amazing views. We did the 2 mi up the grindstone Trail and got a good workout in. Once you get to the top the views are breathtaking. Everyone we encountered on the trail was very friendly and we would love to return here again.

Even after the fire Pilot Mountain State Park is still a gem! The Grindstone Trail is somewhat steep however is you are in reasonable physical shape it is a fun hike. Be sure to take water, especially if you take your dogs. The views from the top are breathtaking however the hike up is gorgeous. Be sure to wear boots the protect your ankles because there are rocks that could be foot twisters if you do not step carefully. Plan on about four hours to hike up and back and still have time to enjoy the view.

Absolutely
We were there labor day weekend it was about 10 degrees cooler at the top and windy too
They should be at their peek but if there been a lot of rain the colors might not be as bright
Probably average 2-3 times a winter. The road will be closed until it can be cleared but people are allowed to park outside the gate and hike in if the road is closed.
I have at&t, perfect signal, beautiful view. This is one of God's gifts to us. Peace.
Absolutely, North Carolina has the most foliating trees and plants in the whole world!
