Loved this neat mountain lake! It was beautiful and sooo relaxing! Caught some small fish, nothing big enough to keep

Beautiful, peaceful place.

Me, my husband, a friend, and two dogs camped here last week for four nights. It was amazing! We chose Cabresto Lake because it seemed like it would be more secluded and away from other people than most public campsites. It did not disappoint, but be aware that there was a lot of day traffic with tourists from Red River. The views from our campsite, which sat the top of the NW hill, were spectacular. The weather was nice, too—50s at night, I think, and high 80s in the day. It did hail/rain for a bit on one of the days and the site was a slippery mud pit for awhile, but it dried out quickly. We felt safe even though there were a few groups that came out to party each night; they were always gone by the next morning. The biggest nuisance was the rodents. There were many mice, chipmunks, and squirrels in the area and they were relentless. In addition to driving the dogs nuts, they were constantly trying to get into our backpacks and tents. Hantavirus is common in this area so be sure to put your food up and clean your campsite each morning! The vault toilet was absolutely disgusting, but I think that’s because it’s not being maintained due to COVID (I could be wrong?!?) Anyway, it should be locked if that’s the case. And who dumps their trash there anyway... so tacky. Apparently, they don’t understand pack in/pack out. Much has been made of the road and I was a little freaked about it going up, but we made it just fine in a 4Runner in dry conditions. You can definitely make it in a lower clearance vehicle but make sure the road is dry, go slow, and choose your lines appropriately. I would not attempt this road in wet or icy conditions, but as with everything your experience and confidence may enable you to do so. :) Happy camping!

Many campsites and fire pits. Explore the trails to find more. Do NOT try and get up to the lake unless you have good ground clearance.

No
No amenities. Vault toilet. Rough road in. My minivan made it. But it really pretty rough. Worth the drive.
Free camping. If you take it slow you should be able to make it up without any problems. I have seen sedans make it up before.
Probably not the best idea but if you do no diving lake is nothing but rock on the bottom and watch for fish hooks everywhete
Ask locals for all the best areas, we had luck last year. Spoons work well when water was clear
