We all know how difficult it is to separate the waste and recycle them. This facility has done the excellent job in collecting the garbage, separating them, accepting the donations of food, books, useful stuffs and distributing them to needy ones. People in the community can take their recyclables there and put them in corresponding designated bins.

Great self service drop off recycling center and reuse area. Free. Takes cardboard, limited plastics, glass, clothes,, electronics, motor oil and batteries. Very busy on weekends.
Abhiroop Basu
Whenever we have any extra items to recycle, the Recycling Center is a quick trip away. The opening hours make it easy to go during the weekend and the ample parking space means I can dispose of extra items without hunting for a parking spot. It's really a great service for El Cerrito city residents.

a very pretty place with a myriad of choices which are normally hard to find.. the limits now imposed by the closing of Chinese recycling options.. ./ones which WE should have- such as recycling hard and soft plastics- could be remedied by more professional communication and finesse with other recyclers nationwide. .. as well, i feel their economic model is like their parking design.. lacking common-sense and creativity. That said, it's still a great spot, but shows it's at a limited state of development.

Yes, they take dishwashers. You can put it in front of the steel bin.
If it is block Styrofoam, yes. If it is Styrofoam peanuts, no. You can drop off clean styrofoam peanuts to any local mailing postal center like a UPS store or most any mailbox center that also ships packages, or list it as free on Craigslist for people who can reuse it
If the freezer still works, I would suggest posting it for free on Craigslist or some other Buy Nothing group. Reuse before recycling.
Hi, Karen, It looks like you posted this question on the Google Community page - try http://ca-elcerrito.civicplus.com/533/Recycling-Environmental-Resource-Center
No. No normal recycling center takes asbestos toxic waste. That's on you to contact an asbestos professional to properly dispose or recycle it
Yes they took my #6 styrofoam today 11/15/19.
For the electronics question.... do they also take broken flat screens? Or is this just limited to small electronics such as phones tablets computers ect.
Creative Reuse in Oakland is a great place to donate items like that as well.
*6/2019 Update* At EC Recycle: there is no longer a public accessible drop off "hard plastic" bin at their facility. So, no they do not accept at this time
*6/2019 Update* No, El Cerrito Recycling Center is no longer accepting all Clean dry plastic bags, if you were to drop by. There is no longer a bin for everything plastic that is solid or flimsy. If you are an El Cerrito Resident, you can put your plastic bags in your curbside Recycling bin for your weekly waste management pickup.
No, you can't get any kind of compensation from your recyclables from this facility
The hazardous waste disposal in Richmond will let CC residents drop off up to 3 mattresses per month and it’s free! Bring your ID.
You can put in the recycle electronics area
Yes. The bicycle bin is an extension of our Reuse Zone, take what you want, leave what you want.
Your City Hazardous waste drop off will take it for free and responsibly recycle it
Yes, and just about everything else.
There are some hazardous wastes that are accepted here, including batteries and various household liquids, so it's definitely possible, and even seems likely, but I'm not 100% sure.
No, except for Styrofoam for some reason.
Yes
They do. If they are in pill form, they may ask you to open the bottle and put them into a baggie.
No they don't pay for recycling
The Recycling Center does not purchase items. You can drop off, but check with the office first before bringing appliances.
Not now. They used to accept them.
No. U must drop it off.
Yes, they recycle electronics.
Their machine for recycling is often broken. I would call first. Also, if you are not a resident of El Cerrito or Contra Costa County, there will be a small fee for recycling.
The El Cerrito Recycling Center does not recycle bubble wrap anymore. They had to stop accepting thin film plastics because their customers stopped buying the material. They do recycle styrofoam, but there is a catch. They are only accepting styrofoam from El Cerrito city residents during Covid, and proof of residency is required. Normally they accept styrofoam from people who live outside of El Cerrito for a small fee that starts at $0.75. I hope this helps. Jon Hesser
You can check with staff on site, but I believe exercise equipment is not accepted.
Discharged fire extinguishers may be accepted but you can always call the office to check. Staff is very helpful.
El Cerritos take tv& flat screen & printers no mam I do not pick up maybe a neighbor or a family member can take items for you sorry self service
Yes
Yes they take books. Yes the free exchange area is closed but they have a bin to donate books BETTER - find a local Little Library & donate to it. There are many in El Cerrito.
I don't think so, you would have to ask
I believe so, but not sure. They definitely take metal cans.
No
Do we receive cash for appliances and printers?
I have not seen a section for tires
There is a recycling bin for metal. So if it is all metal, you can. But if it's wood with metal, I'm not sure. You may have to disassemble it, because there is a recycling bin for wood and metal (separately)
They do, in the electronics bin
Not at this time. But, you can search here by your zip code on where you can recycle. https://www.recyclewhere.org/
No. Furniture is not accepted.
No
Maybe in the metal scrap if it's broken down
El Cerrito Recycling is self served...All you do is drive up and start unloading your items
You can recycle steel and aluminum pans with Teflon coating.
Any TV working or not is acceptable. There's an area on the right of the center designated for TV's. If you have a remote control to go with it, you can tape it to the TV. Make sure you tie up or rubber band the cord so no one trips on it. I believe EC Recycle would like people to place TV's on the pallet so that they can easily move them. If the TV is big and heavy, call ahead of time to see if someone can help you unload it.
Depending on type of photo, a poloroid for example would be no or anything high gloss I imagine. I would maybe donate them to a reuse center- Berkeley had one for a while. Photography developing unfortunately involves some pretty toxic chemicals.
The EC Recycling Center is open to all in the community, however some recycling item bins maybe locked and only available for EC Residents, like the medications bin. See EC Recycle rules here: https://www.el-cerrito.org/957/Recycling-Center-Rules See Updates for EC Residents/Customers outside of EC here: https://www.el-cerrito.org/1353/Recycling-Updates
No wood items are accepted. Consider donating housewares, furniture, and building materials to Urban Ore in Berkeley. Accept/do not accept list at: http://urbanore.com/ecopark-store/drop/drop-off-rules/
Unless it's all metal, no sinks, toilets, bathtubs, saunas, or pools
Oh you might want to call the office about that. For a bit they were concerned about the amount of plastic on the length of cord on some electronics
I suggest you call the EC Recycle office Cubical about this including quantity before drop off. - Cheers :)
Thank you what if you look be in Richmond will they accept my recycle? I meant I live in Richmond
Yes, there is a place to drop off electronics, including flat screen TVs. Ask a staff member if you have any questions.
I doubt that they accept treadmills BUT there is a St Vincent de Paul truck that probably will accept it. Why not just take it & see?
No. They are not allowed in recycle can nor at recycle center. Only option might be at grocery stores.
They used to. As of 10/5/2019, EC Recycle is temporarily NOT accepting Styrofoam. See this page for more information: https://www.el-cerrito.org/952/Drop-Off-Materials-Accepted
Electronics are accepted for recycling every day. There is a designated dropoff point inside the facility.
Yes The Recycling Center accepts electronic devices for recycling.
Unfortunately, residential recycling programs for propane cylinders are not yet available in many areas. If a propane cylinder recycling program is not yet offered by your local steel recycler, below are instructions to properly dispose of an EMPTY 16.4 oz. propane cylinder. CAUTION: Read and follow instructions and warning on the propane cylinder before disposal to avoid serious injury or death! To properly dispose of an EMPTY 16.4 oz. propane cylinder: Take the EMPTY cylinder outdoors away from any open flame or ignition source as they can ignite leaking gas. Attach the EMPTY cylinder to an appliance. In an outdoor, well-ventilated area, open the control valve on the appliance and light the burner(s). Operate the appliance until the flame completely extinguishes. Turn the appliance control valve off and let appliance cool. Detach the EMPTY cylinder. Dispose of the EMPTY cylinder in an OUTDOOR trash container for the next normal trash collection.
Styrofoam peanuts and other shipping filler materials like bubble wrap are accepted at all UPS or Private Mail Box stores as drop off. You can call your local store to confirm if unsure. All hard or soft and flimsy plastic is no longer accepted at EC Recycle drop-off as of right now. In the future, it may be available, but only for El Cerrito Residents who show identification
At the "exchange zone", which is the island in the middle of the recycling center, there's a giant bin for magazines right next to the bin for books. You can dump them right in there and people really enjoy them. Thank you for not just throwing them away!
No
No
The center does not accept wood or green waste. Best place is most likely Berkeley Transfer Station.
There are bins for steel and aluminum. Check with an employee of the center or contact the administrative office about other metals.
Theft of recyclables from curbside containers should be reported to local law enforcement. The recycling center receives has no enforcement authority.
Yes. EC Recycles all types of TV's. You will want to park on the right side of the circle parking lot if possible. Bring a furniture dolly or something with wheels or another person to help you drop it off should you have to park away from the drop off point. There should be a wooden pallet to place TV on or a certain area that says TV's. It would be a good idea to make sure you know where this is before attempting to take it out of your vehicle. If there's not enough room at the drop off area, consult an EC Recycle representative so they can either clear a space or give you guidance
See the photos I attached recently of the different recycling bins and signs. There's a pallet where the microwaves go on the right side near where you can put the electronic devices. El Cerrito Recycling takes most electronics except small appliances. The full list of acceptable items is here: http://bit.ly/ecrecycle
The Center does not accept mattresses.
EC Recycle only accepts blocks and shipping pieces. No small peanut sized packing Styrofoam. You can give away packing peanuts to any postal business like the UPS store or list for free on Craigslist. As for EC Recycle there's a giant bin you can put it big pieces in there
*6/2019 Update* Yes for the glass: it would be nice if you could take off the labels for bottles. No mirrors. No for the plastic. There's no longer a public accessible bin at their facility for plastic solid or flimsy.
Yes. That's fine. People do it all the time. As long as it's clean, dry, and flattened. If you want you can call ahead, but they have open bins for it, and staff in the back that monitor the bins with forklifts to switch full with empties as needed. Remember, you don't get paid anything for drop offs at this location. It's all voluntary
CDs, DVDs, etc. can be dropped off in the Exchange Zone. Magnetic media (floppy discs, cassette tapes, VHS) are not accepted.
Yes
They are Only accepted in Your recycling Cans. None of the recycling centers that i know of will Buy them back as Aluminum Unless you go to the Bulk Recycling centers like Sims Metal Management. " Good Luck ". Also it's Like the Plastic Milk jugs. In Los Angeles, CA they pay $$$ for them But " NOT " in Northern California. " it's a SHAME "!!! It should be " Fair " across the Country.
*6/2019 Update* No, not to my knowledge does EC Recycle sell recyclables back to the general public. If you want something in a bin, you can ask the office and see what they say. EC Recycle has signs currently posted on the bins that do not permit customers to take from within
On the right side of EC Recycle there's a pallet of TV's and microwaves. If you can put it there or near there if it's too big for that area, that would be nice. It can be in non/working condition, and there's no fee. it's also right next to the electronics bin, and not far from the batteries disposal in case you have those things to recycle as well
No. Try the Berkeley Transfer Station at 2nd & Gilman.
Yes, any working or non-working TV can be placed on the wooden pallet to the left near the electronics [cardboard] bin, which is on the right side of the center
"As a convenience ECR accepts CFLs from residents within the Recyclemore service area. Fees apply for large quantities: 30 feet or more of tubes or 15 or more bulbs." https://www.el-cerrito.org/952/Drop-Off-Materials-Accepted http://recyclemore.com/hazwasteitem/fluorescents-lamps-tubes
I don't work there, but have seen them left there more than once
*6/2019 Update* EC Recycle no longer accepts small kitchen appliances. The unused tins of paint can be recycled at your city hazardous waste facility, you can drop off the CD's to the Goodwill dropbox located on the left side of the parking lot (you might want to put them in a manila envelope or something if they come without covers).
EC Recycle does not take plants. If you have clean plastic pots there's a bin for them. You will have to dump your yard waste elsewhere
No paint cans. Oakland and Richmond have drop sites for all types of hazardous materials.
No. But the Goodwill Donation Trailer is also located in the same parking lot (left side). You can drop it off there: Hours: Daily 9:30am-5pm (closed 1-1:30pm for lunch) Do not leave items outside of trailer when not open. There's only one attendant at the drop off trailer. Items left outside will be assumed saved for Recycling Center customer, since it's their parking lot. Items left will be in the way of vehicle drop off area (space is limited). Goodwill Donation Trailer drop off area is located at exit route of the Recycle Center (Please be considerate if temporarily parking there for drop off) See this link to find out what Goodwill will accept (stuffed animals would be categorized as "toys") http://www.co.contra-costa.ca.us/depart/cd/recycle/options/v6528.htm
No. I believe you have to cut the propane cylinders into pieces, or else they won't take them.
No
Just put it in the recycle electronics bin, broken or not
I think so. Call them to find out.
You can recycle them all at the El Cerrito Recycling Center in their appropriate bins, however the bubble mailers you'll have to separate the plastic liner from the paper envelope material
According to their web site, they do. "Cartons (all varieties except tetra packs) must be rinsed. They are pulped for their paper fibers."
Put the tree lights in the electronics bin. If you erase or degause the video tapes you can give them to the Goodwill trailer in the same lot
No. That's considered trash because all your skin is absorbed into it over time, that's why it gets so heavy. Best to call your waste management about bulky pickup so they can properly dispose of it
Yes, clean plastic bags and bubble wrap would go in the plastic film bin. Just put it in a bag so it's not messy. EC Recycle also accepts most any clean solid plastics, like k-cups, plastic bins, etc. What they can't recycle will be responsibly taken care of.
Most Satellite dishes are made of plastic and the rods and mounts are made of metal. Yes, you can recycle it. However, there are some people who reuse it as WiFi, Hobby Radio or TV antennas. If you want to you can sell it or give it away on Craigslist. If you bring it to EC Recycle, keep it all intact and put it in the metal bin close to the edge. Some lucky person will pick it up or it will be recycled by the facility
I am a diabetic and have taken needles to the El Cerrito Recycling center. They accept them in a clean plastic container with a screw on top - such as an empty laundry detergent container-- or the ones you buy for this specific purpose. You need to go into the office and they will open the locked recycling container for you. This is hazardous waste, but properly contained, they'll accept it.
If you bring it to EC Recycle, you will be rewarded with the happiness of self satisfaction that you have helped rid yourself of wasted space, given something of value to a non-profit, and lessened pollution. However if you really want to exchange it for monetary benefits, you'll have to take it to a facility that will actually pay for it. I would Google search for a Scrap Metal yard near me and make sure they have a current price list online or at least a phone number to call about it. I'd shop around without mentioning so you get the best price
This place does not have a buy back program, and 98% of all items that they will accept can be recycled for free. Only a few items that are free to dispose of by El Cerrito residents, incur a fee charge for non-El Cerrito residents (eg: medicine recycling, mulch pick-up)
Nope
Yes, EC Recycle accepts printer ink jet and laser toner cartridges
Some Berkeley wine merchants will accept wine corks - real ones only, not plastic - and recycle them for new corks.
