A very inadequate library compared with my youth. Terrible online catelogue which the librarians apologize for.

Pretty much everything a community public library should be, growing and keeping up with the times. Over the past 5 decades or so I have seen Howe move from an old building downtown to this location, and build extensions, but it has always been a great place to hang out, study, read and generally enjoy.

Very nice town library with ample space for doing some work, enjoying a few hours with the kids in the children's section, or having a read of the daily newspapers or periodicals. Where some improvement can be had is in the WiFi speed and coverage department. Another nice feature is the ability to reserve one of the two small meeting rooms for a call or some quite work.

The wifi here was clocked at almost 200 mbps that's the fastest I've seen on the Appalachian trail. Happened to be here during a retirement party. The cupcakes were a fun treat!

Questions & Answers

When will the library be opened for browsing.

Howe Library | Aug 27, 2021

Hi Joan, We do not have an exact date yet, but are aiming to have in-person browsing in the building by late July at the latest. We do have outdoor pop-up libraries, where you can browse new books, audiobooks, and DVDs in the Children's Garden. All ages are welcome to browse on Saturdays from 10am-1pm. There is also a pop-up library for adults on Wednesdays from 1-3pm. -Megan

If you aren't from Hanover . Can you get a library card ? Is it still free ? Or how much is it ? I don't live in Hanover. But want to use Hanover library. Thanks.

Thanks for your question. You can get a library card if you do not live in Hanover. It currently costs $140 a year for a household; $95 if there is a senior (65+) in the household. You are always welcome to use the library and come to programs if you do not have a card, but you wouldn't be able to check out materials. You can find out more about non-resident fees, along with who does qualify for a free card, at: https://thehowe.org/uploads/1493738861.pdf -Megan

Do you subscribe to interlibrary loan? If so, may I ask for a specific book? It is Toward of Definition of Antisemistism by Gavin Langmuir, U. of California Press, 1996. I am a resident of Kendal and have a Howe Library card. Sallyann Amdur Sack,
