The quality of costumes and level of customer service at Gene's is unmatched in the DC area. Ginger and her team offer highly personalized service and go above and beyond to make sure you get the perfect costume(s). Prices are very reasonable too. As a professional costume designer working at multiple schools and theaters in the DMV, Gene's is always the first place I go when I need to rent. Can't recommend them enough!!

Terrible experience. I emailed with Ginger in advance; she told me they had costumes for the period I was looking for and said that coming in on Wednesday would be "Perfect, Perfect!" When I arrived, she wouldn't acknowledge my presence at all until she was done with her other customer, I thought "at least she gives the customer her full attention". She made it clear I was an imposition, explaining that she couldn't help me because she was behind on other orders. She laughs at you if you ask about a catalog or any sort of organization/guidance. If you look at anything in the first room, she will warn you that those are picked out for someone else. I'm still not sure what you have to do to get her to pick out suggestions or get the level of service others seem to get. She gestured generally to areas I should look, there was exactly one dress for the that period. I was so annoyed and so uncomfortable that I simply left. She was rude to every customer I saw her interact with. I would never go back there.

5 stars! Waited last minute to get a Halloween costume. Went to 4 different party city/spirit stores which were sold out of everything. This location has everything you need in stock and great customer service.

Gene's Costumes is a hidden gem. Unlike the giant box stores, this tiny shop has lots of one-of-a-kind costumes that will set you apart. Located in a quaint little house in Kensington, it still packs a big punch! The aisles are lined with masks, stuffed animal heads, makeup elaborate head pieces and much more. For more specific costumes like Michael Jackson, Princess Lea, Louis XIV, or Minnie Mouse... you can rent. Of course the popular items like Jon Snow (Game of Thrones), pirates, witches and clowns are readily available for purchase. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable. If you don't see what you are looking for, be sure to ask. They might still have it stashed in their warehouse.
