Working with Steve Smith at GrowthSource Coaching was an amazing experience, professionally and personally. Steve is an excellent business coach that has helped me grow my business. I noticed the benefits early on as he coached me to create processes and procedures. And I continue to notice the benefits years later as I continue to scale the business. Steve's insight and knowledge as a business coach are and continue to be greatly appreciated!

I had the pleasure of working with Steve for three months and have walked away from the experience a better version of myself. A true leader in his own right, his systematic approach ensures that all of my activities, actions and decisions drive to success on both a professional and personal level. He will teach you how to be extraordinary by doing an internal audit on your behaviors, actions, and cognitive blind spots. His ability to have crucial conversations and show you the way to be the best version of yourself is exceptional. My own personal performance and subsequent success as a leader has grown exponentially because of Steve. I am happy to speak with anyone considering an engagement with Steve, as I wish I had met him many years before now.

I reached out to Steve to offer Leadership coaching for our 6 directors. They all had a great experience and gained the tools needed to understand different managing styles. I highly recommend GrowthSource Coaching for all management teams.

Questions & Answers

Does the coach need experience in the client's business or industry to be effective?

GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

No. While it might help in terms of insights that the client could benefit from, the area of experience that will help the most is a thorough understanding of how to run and grow a business. For executives, having experience in leading people, teams, departments or divisions is all that is necessary for a great client experience. The rest of the progress comes from you, the client.

Will you coach my subordinates or employees without my involvement?

GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

No. At a minimum, I need to understand what outcome you expect from your employees if I decide to work with them. I also need to know that they are willing participants in the coaching process. More importantly, because much of how they perform is dictated by how you lead and manage, you and I may need to spend some time together beforehand to accurately determine your employees professional needs.

How do I know you are capable of helping me?

Coaching is a very personal relationship. So, determining if a coach is capable of helping you with the areas of your career or business you are interested in should include reviewing their areas of expertise, reading about how they coach on their website, reading reviews about the results of other clients and speaking to them personally. I offer a free 30 minute consultation so you can determine if who I am and how I coach is what you want.

Hi Steve, What is your approach to coaching a client who talks about implementing a new idea/process versus getting them to actually execute and sustain this process?

Daren Schultz | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

Daren, this issue is at the heart of just about everyone's desire to have what pops up in their head; the ability to implement. Implementation requires dedicated action which comes from emotion. So, in answer to your question, getting someone to execute a new idea or process requires them (or you) to connect that idea with an emotional hook that means something to them. As an example, what's the reason they would do this and why is it important to them? If they don't have a real vested interest in the outcome, they won't spend the time and energy taking action.

Hi Steve, Does your business consulting have a personal, life coaching aspect to it?

Brian Fleming | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

Great question Brian. My coaching is focused on business or professional performance. Every business owner or executive has things in their life that impact their professional performance and in such cases, we deal with the personal challenges that undermine the business side of life. Some examples are low self confidence, limited thinking, poor personal image or difficulty developing relationships. All of these and more can severely undermine your desire to improve your performance and the business you are responsible for. The difference in what we do as opposed to a therapist is, we stay focused on the desired future outcome while dealing with the issue. Most therapy stays in the past.

How do you coach to employees who have deficiencies but are not aware of them (or even worse believe it is their strength!)

Kevin J. Dykes | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

Employees who are unaware of their deficiencies is not an unusual situation but if they aren't interested in learning becasue they believe these deficiencies are really strengths, can be a real challenge. The main way to get them to realize what others see is to first determine what performance outcome is affected by their deficiencies. These outcomes could involve job related performance, interpersonal connections with clients or behaviors effecting the workplace. Then, invite them to meet and discuss the performance deficiency. By asking the right questions to get at the core of the performance issue, you will need to ask them what they think they do or not do that might be influencing the result. Remember, they will not likely accept any coaching or suggestions for improvement until they see what you see- that their actions or behaviors are linked to the unacceptable performance.

What are some of the typical misconceptions people have regarding what a coach does for them?

Travis Smith | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

The greatest misconception from people considering coaching is about who does the work. Like joining a gym to get in shape, you do the workouts, not your trainer. Your trainer is there to show you what to do, how best to do it and hold you accountable for working hard. A coach works the same way with you in your business or professional performance. The coach can't do it for you but should guide the way and insure you do what you commit to doing. This is how personal improvement is achieved and how people break through their own limitations to perform at new, higher levels.

How is coaching different from consulting?

GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019
GrowthSource Coaching | Business & Executive Coaching- Orange County, CA | Aug 27, 2019

Coaching is the process of self-reflection, discovery and commitment to address situations you are trying to achieve. When working with an experienced coach who knows how to draw insights from you and provide objective feedback, you develop the ability to see your circumstances the way others do. You become more confident about making decisions that can change your situation and improve your outcome. Great coaching invokes a sense of clarity about your choices, keeping you on track and accountable for the commitments you make. Business coaching improves your ability to improve your organization's performance and achieve the success you want. Consulting, on the other hand, is bringing in someone with knowledge and experience in a particular area of business to do the work for you, to bring the solution to you or to manage part of your business for you until the desired results are achieved.
